Double braid splice

OK, so Im getting pretty good at the double braid splice (class 1). The only problem Im having, is on the final bury. If I stop at my mark (my desired eye size) I still have a bit of slack in the cover. If I get all the slack out, it makes the eye a little smaller and harder to fit a biner in it on tight eyes. What am I doing wrong? How can I correct it?

Thanks for any input,

Matt

I ran into this problem when I first started doing them and I think the best thing I could do was just make your mark bigger. So make your eye bigger than what you really want when your marking, to compensate for that final bury and you will get the eye size that you really want. I also saw a guy do it in a video too. Try that out. It worked for me. Eventually it just wont budge any further and it'll be perfect, no slack, crossover nice and deep and perfect eye size.

It sounds like something is going wrong here... my guess is that you are not keeping the slack out of the eye during the final bury. It is vitally important to make sure that as you are performing the final bury you don't allow slack to bunch up. Slack in the eye greatly reduces the strength of the splice as the core and cover are not working together properly. If all of your measurements are correct you should be able to bury up to your eye mark with no left over slack.

Some pretty aggressive "snap tugs" on the eye while your rope is anchored can help alleviate the slack build up during the final bury.

Thank you Monsieur Hattier, I tought I was doing something wrong. Just got a new one done and I payed real close attention to the eye. Came out spot on! Im realy enjoying this splicing stuff.
