don't try this at home

Re: don\'t try this at home

Are you off your meds again David?

Pretty dellusional thinking that I wouldn;t care if the butt of that ash top hit the bucket truck...

Bull.

You don't care about damaging other trees, you just don't want to hear about it from us.

Glad we are kinda keeping you safe...

Can you think of no situation where it would be good to get a bucket truck away from the tree before pulling a top over?

I can think of two right off the bat..

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep...one being the presence of brittle limbs above that could break.

I also see a benefit of bore cutting with a strap that helps hold a bit..till the pull is applied....in similar situations.

Re: don\'t try this at home

Glad you liked it Roger, cause I put it up for you.. really!

the overhead hazard scenario would make 3. The first two would be falling a backleaning top, where the only open spot to drop it is where the bucket was parked. The second is if you wanted the tips to rotate well past level and have the butt kick back past the stump to shorten the fall.

Do you think there is anyone else around here using that cut?

Re: don\'t try this at home

no, its a trick cut...remember jim

this guy is EXACTLY like an old boss of mine... thought he was gods gift to the cutter world. be it timber fallers, professional arborists, he knew more, knew why, has been doing it longer (20, no 25 years, maybe 27) and could predict that his cutting was "27% faster and more accurate than anyone"

its like, you talk to him and it goes through one ear and other the other and every time there is an automated, correct response to what you have to say, regardless of what it is...

HAHA, this guy is a TRIP!!

Re: don\'t try this at home

4th would be the situation in the dry oak removal video, where I wanted to set the saw in the bucket, then call for the pull, so I could push the butt by hand as it released to move it into a good LZ..

I take criticism very well...
2004 at the ISA conference in Pittsburg: a "famous" arborist showed me that the hinge in one of the photos in the tapered hinge article (TCIA Mag Jully 04) did nothing to control the tree's fall. First words out of my mouth were "that's a bad photo".. It was a mistake that I still feel bad about. He taught me something I didn't know and I learned a valuable lesson.

Then he proceeded to tell me that his research buddies in Germany had "proved" that the tapered hinge did nothing to control the fall of side leaning trees. To this day I still disagree with that. I know better!

Some here may also remember the old days at AS, when Tom D and Mike Maas totally changed my mind sbout the practice of elevating trees. I admitted I was wrong and to this day I AM grateful to them, for corecting me, and the valuable lesson I learned from them.

So I AM quite happy to recieve proper criticism, becasue it means I get to learn something. That however has not happened around here in a while. Teach me something and I'll thank you. 'Til then I'll stand my ground.

Re: don\'t try this at home

why not just climb the tree and leave the bucket out of the way ? What was the reason for the cut ? A video ? I don't get it , wasn't a hazardous tree , just doesn't make sense . A non climber cut , right? the title of the thread is " don't try this at home " looks to me like a homeowner did it !

Re: don\'t try this at home

The point of this video is a point that you have made already..
MY BUCKET IS 20' TOO SHORT!

So I make due.. there are the occasional trees where the only place to drop the top is right where the bucket is parked. Nice when they are backleaners...

There are other uses as well.. Lately I've been just using it to move away from the cut and shooting the video from the bucket. Those aren't the reasons I AM talking about though.

Re: don\'t try this at home

well your video was twenty seconds too long . It was a peanut Ash tree , the time you took to get your bucket outta the way , the camera man set up and Clint Eastwood out of his trailer , a Guatamalen climber from asplunh would have had the tree down and split in cords for the customer . Stop playing games with trees for the sake of youtube . A bucket twenty feet short , could have dropped a climber off in the top , by the time it was outta of the way , the top would have been gone , made the same (?) cut but not the same video . This Ain't ( is a word) broadway , the only thing missing from your act is singing . Than maybe Broadway , bigtime , you could open for Greenday. http://americanidiotonbroadway.com/

Re: don\'t try this at home

I thought you said you weren't going to reply to any more of my threads ever again?

Not that I AM complaining... just wondering...

ps.. I like the singing idea.. always looking for something original to throw at the boys... Did a 3500 tree in 5 hours on Saturday.. messed up though.. showed up home a half hour late for a date, and ended up telling her to call me in November... Got it on video though.. so that's good :)..

Re: don\'t try this at home

HOw much did it cost you to make that 3500 Dan?
How many men did you have? What was the crane cost?
What do you consider a fair rate for 1 man hour.
I shoot for 65 peman hour.
I get so pissed when I hear about treeguys raping people.
Its all easy chit right?

Funny huh?

You all can't decide if I Am a low ball hack taking risky short cuts to make my low bids work.. or a gouging rapist..

The $3500 was not my price, it was what the customer asked me to do ir for. He was thrilled with the job. I still have to pick up the wood. No crane.. just the bucket and all those new blocks and slings... Got the video.. unfortunately someone handed me the camera while it was in the record mode and when I hit the rec button, just as the tree was coming down. I missed the crucial shot, as I had just put the camera in standby, which will make a dissapointing vid.

The backleaning locust was even better $/hr. Jansen, a well known tree contractor around here, had bid 2600... I did the job for 2500, plus added grinding the stumps, lost the grindings and leveled the area. I was on site 2.5 hours. All the wood and debris got dropped back in the wild area. I went to look at the job at 1:30.. tree was on the ground before 5:30.. customer was thrilled.

The competition is cutthroat around here.. with some using the tree business to wash their drug money.. I'd have been thrilled if I could have made 65/man/hr every day of the week last year.. Gotta make it when you can.
