don't try this at home

Re: don\'t try this at home

As Kevin said, why not top it??? Leaving that top teetering like that is an unnecessary risk as a climber. I know its a thick hinge, but what if its rotten, or is a species of tree that is brittle? Just doesn't make much sense to risk it all like that.

Re: don\'t try this at home

In one way I agree it is dangerous to leave the top just hanging on like that, but like you guys said what if its rotten?, maybe below the T.I.P. though? would it not be safer to be well away from the top and possible rotten stub?

Re: don\'t try this at home

All good having a play ,don't see the benefit of this particular cut over a conventional scarf and back cut really as the amount of holding /hinge wood is the key .IMO both techniques would work fine. Keep the vids coming as whether i like or not i can always learn something .

Why didn't you just top it when you were up there?

I made all cuts on that tree from the bucket.. I had two concerns on that cut. First not damaging the adjacent tree.Second not damaging the bucket truck. I was near 100% sure that the drop would have cleared both. But becasue the top had a bit of backlean (to the lay), and a lot of side lean (away from the bucket), the top was going to stay put until pulled..

So the real reason I moved the truck was to get a get far enough back with the bucket to get a good video shot. Getting the bucket out of harms way was a secondary benefit.

if you are in the bucket i could see this being a trick that has a place once in a while. gets you out of harms way

I think what hes saying is if he wasnt going to video the tree he would have been at the cut. Not nescessarily making the cut like that so as to be far away from it.
Is this correct?

So if you were doing this in a tree unsafe to climb but the top was out of bucket reach this is a technique to handle that.

Re: don\'t try this at home

I think that is a fine comment Grover.

Hey Daniel, your tree service should be called; Skid Loader Tree Service.

"Where at 'Skid Loader Tree Service' we don't do any tree work, unless it can be done with the skid loader."

man, you are like the Jerry Springer show when it got started.

A few more and we are going to have to post that no one views your videos, despite the urge to view them.

Bull.

You don't care about damaging other trees, you just don't want to hear about it from us.

You don't care about hitting the truck, you just don't want to hear about it from us.

Glad we are kinda keeping you safe...

Re: don\'t try this at home

I didn't see this cut below the felling cut the first time, this looks unstable and dangerous.
What was the reason for the lower cut?

Looks like it was from another trunk, already removed. The camera angle is deceptive. When the view goes up and down the tree, you can see the wider surface of the cut, showing its not just a kerf. The original look at it is dead horizontal to it.

What's the reason for a plunge cut when its needing a skidsteer worth of pulling power? Maybe out of reach of the bucket and not wanting to climb it???

Mighty tall weeds? Are they weeds or native plants? Either way, it might be in the acceptable collateral damage that was agreed to with the HO????

That opinion does adds nothing to the conversation.. WHY is it crap? Seriously... without the why there is nothing to learn either way...

Can you think of no situation where it would be good to get a bucket truck away from the tree before pulling a top over?

I can think of two right off the bat..
