Donaghys

@Steve Connally; Oops! Just checked the conversion factor online in the other direction, Australian dollars to US dollars, which is what I should have done in the first place. They're saying that factor is 0.75, not 0.66. $5.50 Australian times 0.75 equals $4.125 American dollars per meter. Divided by three equals $1.375 US dollars per foot. Sorry for the earlier error.

$4.125 US dollars per meter equals $247.50 for 60 meters of rope.

You guys get rope and climb gear so cheap. Good catch on the m vs '. I have a beautiful piece of cougar for a long lanyard and it's great.

So what I've learned there were some consistency issues with the cougar. I understand this was sorted and I believe cougar is now SS, or steam set, or whatever, but that consistency has returned and it's all good. It's just what I know, and I believe the person I spoke with some months ago, possibly around the time that TS made the comment here about their issues.

I should try to get to the bottom of this, but I'm so busy at the moment. Donaghys is based in the city I've just moved to. I should be able to get the cheapest Cougar, but I don't think there's even a local retailer here. A factory visit would be good to learn more.

Thanks for all the info. I was about to give Yale Blue Moon a shot, but I think instead I'll buy a Cougar line through Honey Brothers--I'd forgotten about that company until you mentioned them. Much appreciated.

I climb cougar blue and am reconsidering it. Reason being, it's a lot to ask for a rope to cross the planet without experiencing extremes in temperature and/or moisture. A domestic line could also experience these issues, to be fair...

Also, @bonner1040 noted that the splicers at TS did not like splicing cougar blue. I have not spliced double braid yet.

On Instagram, I saw a post of a homemade cougar blue splice next to a production splice. The homemade splice had a thicker neck than the production splice, downstream from the eye. The "homemaker" who posted wondered if the skinny neck retained the break strength. I also wondered if the skinny neck was a result of cougar blue retaining its shape within the outer braid, which presumably (and i may very well be wrong about this) happens because the fibers are packed more densely than in other ropes... If the fibers are more densely packed, it seems like the rope would be more difficult to splice.

Is Tom Culley on Treebuzz? He splices a lot of cougar blue...

I went to Treestuff to buy a new Cougar line, but they apparently don't sell them anymore, and when I called, the guy on the phone said he didn't know why.

1). Does anyone know of a States-based website I can buy a line from?

Alternatively,

2). Is there a comparable rope someone can recommend? I want something equally low-stretch as Cougar and around the same diameter.

My other option is to buy one from an Australian website, but with a spliced eye and shipping, it came out to over $350.

@Worthaug is flying some KM III these days. Very low elongation, so make sure you're up for that. Once my cougar is used up I may switch to this.

@Worthaug; So how are you liking your new XStatic rope so far, and how long have you been climbing on it?

Have you any thoughts to share on how it compares so far with the KM III Max, or any other ropes you care to include?

Tim

It’s almost exactly like the Max with the Wrench but friendlier to the hand

Why does nobody except bartlett offer sewn eyes on it? I'm interested. Teufelberger ropes are my favorite for climbing, and I haven't seen anyone talking about this one yet.

Cougar blue from honey brothers is produced to European ce standards. Believe it is a nylon core instead of polyester Which you get in the states. Makes it bouncier, different rope same branding.

There are CE versions of all colors. Usually marked with a strand or tape in the core. Cougar in the states is full polyester.

What's the equivalent of KmIII max and xtatic in smaller (9.5mm ish) diameter, for my hook/rw setup?

Km III Max comes in 9.5mm and according to the typo 1.1mm
