"...In the process, Shively was able to get eye contact with the driver and believed the operator to possibly be under the influence of alcohol due to the blank stare on his face.

"However, upon stopping the vehicle and expecting to find a drunk driver, Shively instead found the operator of the vehicle in shock with a severe laceration from a chainsaw accident on his arm."

Wow! That's just horrific! Why didn't he call an ambulance? Probably no health insurance? Who knows, but to get behind the wheel and try to get to help? There's more to this, that we're not hearing! Hope he's gonna be okay! Glad he didn't hurt anyone else! Thanks Tuebor

Well for my first post I'll jump in on this one being I'm from the Mitten too.

I work in a city with a hospital in it and its amazing how many people drive themselves or other injured people there instead of calling an ambulance. I see both sides of their arguments, but so many of them think it's ok to drive crazy and put other people in danger to get there. And they forget that an ambulance can begin immediate treatment upon arrival.

Me? No, I would do whatever immediate life saving action I could, call 911 if I am in an area with cell service and start towards the nearest ER. If I meet a LEO or EMS while in route I hop in with them, if not I keep driving.

But the initial call to 911 is crucial. That way they will know your location and have a good idea of possibly what route you're taking. Epecially if you keep an open line with the dispatch. That way if you do end up unconscious and in a ditch they will have an idea of where to look. I'm guessing if that guy had called 911 the DNR officer would have probably been aware of it by radio traffic and maybe looking for him.

Here's a story. Happened in the mid '90s. Before cell phones. Guy I did a roof for was a logger and showed me his arm scar from a saw. Said he was in the woods with his skidder, a big CAT. Something I don't remember what happened and he lacerated his arm. Jumps in his skidder after applying a shirt made tourniquet and high tales it to the ER, ice chains and all in hi gear. A sheriff spots the trail and follows ..... there was the skidder at the front door idling. They never made him pay for asphalt damage.

Edit: I should add the guy drove 20 some miles .... mostly back roads.
