I have a Pignut Hickory here in Sussex County Delaware that has a disease that i cant seem to figure out and am hoping someone can shed some light on this situation! The Hickory is growing in rather sandy soil so wet feet does not seem to be an issue and there are no signs of a lightning strike. From the base of the tree up to about ten to twelve feet the bark is cracked and falling off,the upper crown has very little dead wood and looks to be healthy.Around the base there are no signs of fungal problems or root damage, this tree is not in a construction site and there is no compaction problems it is an open grown tree with a dbh of approx.24 inches.I am hoping this is enough information that someone can help me solve this problem!

before you take the picture plese crefully remove the dead bark so we can see the margins of the wound. sounds like physical injury some time ago just now showing but that is a wild guess.
