disease treatments?

I dont have any experience with Hemlock Twig Rust, but the latter i deal with on a daily basis. If you want to take a totally organic approch try using Sonata Bio-Fungicide, or its sister product Rhapsody Bio-Fungicide. these are only preventatives so if the trees have it already you wont get good control.

This year we took a hybrid approch, just before bud break we used Bannar MAXX and Pentra Bark (cant stress enough BEFORE BUD BREAK). then at a 3-4 week interval we have been doing a foliar of Compost tea and Sonata Bio-Fungicide with a good Organic Sticker (Sorry Compost Tea non-believers) with outstanding results

hey Mr.Tea,
Wouldn't the fungicide you mix with the compost tea kill all of the fungal organisms in the tea?
And what are you using for an organic sticker.
I would love to get a list from you of all the organic / eco friendly products you use. I've picked up four from you in your last two posts. Thanks

No, Sonata and Rhapsody are bacillus subtillus and Bacillus pumilus. these are both bacterial strains that are found in nature and are tea safe.

As for Organic Stickers Nu-Film-P is OMRI listed, which i use when using Organic Based / Reduced Risk Pesticides, Such as Pyganic, Azatrol, Azadactrin, Javalin (Great BT product) ect. For Compost Tea Foliar Apps. Regardless if i have a bacillus product in the mix or not i use a Yucca Product called Therm 70 X

Let me take a look at work tomorrow and see what else i have been using for Reduced Risk. I would just like to add that these products are great stand alone's and are no way tea dependent

Label speaks of using it for rusts in legumes, and other diseases for pome fruits. KQ are you saying that to use it on hawthorn for rust would instigate mighty frowns and horrible consequences from the epa?

if such a concern was valid, could it not be addressed by using it to go after scab, if dose and timing are similar, and accept the side benefit of rust control?

There are so many good arboricultural materials and methods out there; why not use your limited energy to advocate for what you think is good, instead of this anti-tea campaign?

Guy, i suppose your questions are better directed at the feds and the ISA. They make these rules.

"why not use your limited energy to advocate for what you think is good"

advocating the violation of federal law on at least two counts is "good"?

I shot a heads up out to the Buzzer's so they might research this before risking a possible hefty penalty. Follow my links and see for yourself. or dont

And which 2 counts are those, Officer Roland? If we apply for scab and fireblight, and rust is thereby controlled, is that a felony?

from here this seems like needlessly restrictive paradigmatizing, with anti-arboricultural effects; what am i missing here?

Guy, do you understand that if you use a pesticide off label you are breaking the law? It appears you do not.

And show me an aerated compost tea with an EPA registration number.

Do we all get to pick and choose which laws to obey as we practice or just you?

The Orginal question was. Treatments for Rust Diseases and if there were some organic options that worked; that would be the route taken.

Here are some non-organic options: propiconazole, Compass, Heritage, Eagle. All work great, all are toxic to fish.

ed, If we apply for scab and fireblight, and rust is thereby controlled, is that use off label? i do not think so.

I put compost in aeration holes and jet-wash it in with a garden hose. I tell tree owners this may boost root function.

Is that a violation? Exactly which law are you referring to?

A valid point, about the off label use issue, I agree that it could be a big problem however some creative language on your work orders can save you from the EPA. Such as " Apply Sonata Bio fugicide to the Hawthorne in the right rear of property for leaf disease."

within that statment you have everything the EPA requires; 1. what product are you using 2. to what are you applying it 3. where on the property are you applying 4. for what pathagen(s)are you controling.

And for the Organic / Compost Tea (Registration Number) issue. In NY if a product has no reg # it is exempt and does not need to be reported, and is open to any use. Other states may be the same.

Treegazer here is a list of our reduced risk pesticides
INSECTICIDES
1. Javelin WG
2. Neemix 4.5
3. Trilogy
4. Pyganic 1.4
5. Ultra Pure Hort oil
6. Azatrol

FUNGICIDES
1. Sonata Bio-Fungicide
2. Rhapsoty Bio-Fungicide
(and a few more, i forget, will let you know)

The label is the law and all that jazz. EPA likely does not find serendipity a violation.

Concerning the use of compost tea as a pesticide: FIFRA requires the EPA to regulate the sale and use of pesticides and the EPA has some very strict wording concerning what is considered a pesticide. The sale of any pesticide is prohibited in the United States unless it is registered and labeled. I am unaware of any compost tea EPA registered as a pesticide.

New York State Pesticides program @ The Department of Environmental Conservation has this to say about the matter.
"Under New York State law, any pesticide used, distributed, sold or offered for sale in NYS must be registered every two years with the NYSDEC. If a product is listed on the Pesticide Ingredient & Manufacturer System (PIMS) Current Products website, then it is registered and may be sold and used in NYS. If a pesticide is not currently registered with the NYSDEC and is not listed on the PIMS Current Products website, it cannot legally be sold, offered for sale, or used in NYS." http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/8532.html#Labels

So, while guy says officer Roland wastes his limited energies on a crusade against compost tea as a pesticide (post 5, then 6), know that I am simply supplying a tip that might keep some otherwise mighty fine practitioners out of serious legal trouble.
