Different Splice

Spent some time this afternoon putting an eye in a 200 foot piece of 9/16" Yale Crystalyne.

Was a first for me and rather fun. Thought I would share.

Yup, same splice as the Maxi Braid. Not that difficult in the end, just looked weird before it all came together.

The resulting orientation of the jacket is identical to a FLY Kernmantle splice. I've done a few of them, but handed them off to a real pro more often than not. It was easy to end up with something UGLY. Even the pro agreed in the ugliness factor.

A real good whipping and quality shrink wrap helped a ton for a clean finished look.

Very nice work, and great documentation, Tony.

There is a trick to bury the cover, so you dont have to go mad on the whipping.

I have done this splice many times on different ropes, its very difficult to pull it back out even without the whipping.

Tuttle,

I just followed the yale instructions. I will put a piece of shrink wrap over the top just for the heck of it.

I don't actually think I'll use the spliced end that much, just wanted to giver 'er a go.

THanks for the tip, should I do a similar one later.

Its much better to hunt down different ways to splice, the yale instructions, although informative, are a bit cumbersome, measurements are over the top (IMO) drawings sometimes tricky to follow, and tools are bog standard.

There are so many different and better ways to splice, which are undocumented.

Tuttle,

I agree.

However, when in doubt and with no experience with a particular material/rope/braid I would recommend muddling through the manufacture's instructions or have someone else do the splice.

In this case, I have never done a splice like it, nor do I see myself repeating it in the near future!

There are many ways to skin a cat. If this were going to be a regular go for me, like 16 strand or double braid is, I would explore the less complicated options.

I enjoyed the process an am satisfied with the results. Confident it will hold as rated. For me, a part time splicer and full time student of the rope, that is enough.

However, it would be fun to put together a "library" of different techniques/methods.

Tuttle that vid was good stuff. That splicer had that nice pulling tool. He should have made room in the handle for both hands.

Nice looking splice Tony. In that first pic I thought it was tech cord. Meaning it doesn't look like 9/16, more like 6mm.
