deer repellents

Any thoughts on best deer repellent products that are out there. Also what are the drawbacks, such as smell or color and how long do they last . Thanks

This would be for deer repellent programs for commercial and residential properties . Property sizes would vary

I've read about pellets made from hot peppers and garlic, etc. that are effective as long as they're refreshed routinely.

One case that I read about was a landscape nursery that used the pellets around a growing range. They strung a simple rebar and rope 'fence' around the property. then they tied the pellets to the fence. This was effective for a long time. Then they found that the deer were nibbling in one area. They found that the fence had come down and the pellets were laying on the ground. Once the fence was put up it was effective. Cause and effect...it worked.

I'll bet that your state DNR would have some guidance about what might be effective.

Oh...google too.

I have used coyote urine with great success. You can spray it on small piece of cloth and put those on stakes around the area you're trying to protect.

It smells about as horrible as you'd think it would so keep that in mind if you give it a try.

Buck Off! works for about 30 days during the growing season. Doesn't have the "fragrance". Now till Spring I use Spotrete F. Its awesome. Gotta mix with a green dye product or it leaves a white residu on plants. Lasts about three months. READ the label for other precautions. It really lasts.

I've used a product called Plantskydd with success. It's simply cow blood and makes the deer think something has been killed nearby by predators. Annoying to spray and not too cheap but it works.

Also, it may attract bears.

I've used Bobex in the past with good results, but you have to re-apply a few times during the winter. Switched to Spotrete last year? and had good results without the need to re-apply.

Thats the nice thing about Spotrete, it lasts three months during the winter. You can not use it during the growing season at all. Will leave a residu but mix in some green luster and its much better. READ the label and dont use it after a hard nights drinking. The blood products work if you can tolerate the smell and the flies that immediately show up. Blood products can wash off in a good rain too. Buck off will tolerate a good bit of rain and I can treat when my clients are home. It wont stink them off the property. 30 to 45 day residual. Im in the Pine Barrens with heavy Deer pressure. I use only these two products and my clients are happy.
