That is good advice, if the scoring is only surface deep. Post some pics so we can see what you have going on.

[/ QUOTE ] The only recent ones I have is an 038 I ported in late April . It didn't have a burn out but dust ingestion from a torn boot .You can't tell much from the pic .

The saw is out of warrenty because I bought it last year only to cut bigger wood, so it's used very rarely if it had 2-3 hours on it that's it. I tried 2 dealers one quoted me $300 for parts and the other $340 so it is alot more then the kit from baileys. I doudt I could use the same piston, but I'll try posting a pic. It looks like the rings are baked on to the piston on the exhust port side. I also doudt it was because of a bad oil mix like the dealer said because all the other saws, blowers and weed wackers use the same and there is nothing wrong with them. Also I am in no way bashing stihl because I use there products and will comtinue to use them, but I do think $300 for a piston and head is alittle much.

Something is awry because that is extremely low hours to have such a catastophic failure .

I had one on the bench a few weeks ago that had blew the entire inner part out of a crankcase seal .No damage what so ever .Of course it had quit running instantly when it happened . .

If the saw is as new as you say the dealer should back you and go to bat with Stihl on it.

I had a customer buy a brand new 361 about 2.5 years ago. Traded in a 260 pro he put straight gas into. He brought the 361 back 2 days later saying its a POS and wont run. He had put straight gas in this one too! I called Stihl told them the story, told them hes a small time guy and loyal customer. They gave him all the parts for free, and I charged him $50 to do the work.

I try and save the customer $$$$ wherever I can. Whether its me taking less profit on parts, changing the labor hours, or using aftermarket/used parts.

Simon.........The retail is $297.50. For a walk-in customer I would do it for $260-$270. For a GOOD customer that was going to pay me labor I would do it for $240 and charge 1 hour or so labor for doing it.

Theres no sense getting rich off ONE sale/job!

The one dealer that I go every time and buy alot of equipment from wanted $340 for parts and it didn't seem like he wanted the hassle of calling stihl. The other is one that I buy snow equip from and he wanted $300 for parts plus $100 for labor. I think it's time to find a different dealer, I'm kind of pissed because the first dealer I stopped in, I buy something almost every 2 weeks from parts to all my stihl stuff and landscaping equip and have gone out of my way alot of times not to order online but to go to him. I ordered the bb kit from baileys last night so hopefully I can get the saw running by the end of next week and no more stress. Too bad your not closer, you would have a new customer.

Man, $100 for labor. I know with our dealer, when we had to have a new handle/air cleaner put on our 260 , it was around $250 for parts, but only $40 or so for labor. Really great guys over there. The saw has ran perfect since we replaced that handle/air cleaner last year, so they do great work.

I suppose it just has to do with where you live .However I don't care if it is repairing your dishwasher or repairing a saw, around here it's going to cost you 55 and up per hour .

Stihl products are just like anything else .If you built one from parts you would have 5 times as much as the price of the unit would be if were it intact complete .
