Dawn Redwood growing Too Fast ?

I signed up to see GregManning's dawn redwood photo. It's one of the reasons I planted a tiny dawn redwood the other day. Curious how long it will take to reach my 5'4" height. The soil isn't great. It's poorly draining clay. I hope it will do OK. If it does, I can make more space for it. Perhaps it's overkill but I caged it to keep it safe from deer.

@Treerific - How is you Dawn Redwood doing ?

When I planted the Dawn Redwood, I knew that I would eventually have to do some lower branch pruning for the driveway & sidewalk.
I just didn't think that it would be in a few more years.
You’re better doing this kind of pruning now while the tree is younger and most vigorous as opposed to later on. So this is a net positive in my opinion as long as it’s not too much removed or done in stages if necessary.

@GregManning; Is there any chance you'd be willing to post an updated photo of your Dawn Redwood? I know I'm dull, but I just find the rate of growth really exciting. I got to look at a Dawn Redwood close to me that the homeowner said was only 22 years old. I did not have a tape measure on me at the time, but I would swear this tree had a diameter at chest height of around four feet or better. I find that degree of growth shocking. Tim
P.S. Thanks, in advance.

@TimBr

DBH is 6".

7 yrs ago it was "balled"; 8 ft high; it came home entirely inside my car !
It had lots of poorly formed lower branches, due to crowding in a greenhouse. I did some minor initial pruning. I later did some more pruning, after it acclimatized a little.

Once thought extinct, it was “re-discovered” in China in 1943.

It is now fairly widely available.

Planted Dawn Redwood # 2:
Ordered on-line; 12” pot; 6.75 ft tall.
Planted next to 24” Ash stump recently ground down ~ 14”; no roots in plant area.
Stump refilled w/ grind chips & dirt; then spread out around 12' diam.; assume it will settle & decompose quickly.
Mulch area is 12 ft diam.; 2” thick.

Hey, Greg!
This is exciting stuff. I thought I read somewhere that the Dawn Redwoods really love water. If you can manage to provide it with plenty, assuming it's not already in a soggy, low area, I bet that tree will take off like a scalded cat. I cannot wait to see the updates. Congratulations. Tim.

All of my land is "wet" to "moist".
Two trees is not "Muir Woods", but it's a start ! ;)

Sadly, and surprisingly, My newest Dawn Redwood #2, planted in Sept. 2022, did not fair very well over the very mild winter in NE Ohio.
The tree was mail-order.
I sent some comments on the received condition; but there was no response.
I thought there was a 1-year warranty.
I called & sent pics today, 5/1/23. There are basically no viable buds/green shoots on the tree.
I was informed that there was only a 30-day warranty; and I should have purchased a warranty policy for ~ $18, on a $169 tree.
(Frankly, I could leave the tree in the box for 30 days; and probably not see much difference.)
i.e. Sales gimmick.
Extra large shipping $9; Tx’s $12; Total $191 for a 6-7 ft tree (small plastic pot).

After 15 min. of negotiation, they are sending me a 3-4 ft tree, and a $70 “store-credit”. ("Dawn Redwood #3")
(#3 is arriving today 5/5/23)

I will not be ordering any more “fast-growing-trees” on-line.

Now I have a minor delima, #2 has a few very, very small green shoots in the bottom 20". No buds or green above that.

So do I let it try to regrow from "seedling" size; now that it has started to acclimate ?
or dig it out & plant #3 ?

I'm leaning toward leaving #2; and planting #3 in different location. After a couple years I can always dig out #2 & start over.230505 Dawn redwood 2 - new growth -IMG_1051.JPG

I had a gold rush, finally planted it out and the damn deer rutted it girdling the stem. It produced small epicormics just like yours. I took the dead trunk off near the sprouts then the heat dome finished it off!
A alternative approach is put #3 in a large air pot or a grow bag. If you use a grow bag you can plant the bag in the ground leaving a couple of inches above grade.
Give it a year or two and then see if #2 makes it.

Looks like #2 has to kill from not acclimating before a hard winter. The roots likely haven’t died back much, and the new sprouts are growing on a substantial root system. They should take off with vigor!

Staking with 2 stakes, a few feet from the trunk, 180⁰ from one another, with barely loose straps, allows good movement, without overloading movement.
@southsoundtree
Thanks. The bamboo stake was attached during shipment.
After a little "watering-in" / settling, my plan was to remove all stake(s).
I was taught 50 years ago that less staking (if possable) is better for root & plant development in the long run.
There is not much foliage there to be worried about wind-sail.
Thanks again. :sisi:
