Yesterday the chipper knives came thru the cover of my chipper. It appears one of the cutter bar bolts broke and the knives hit the bar. My emoployee had just looked at the knives. Remember to check the bolts too. It did a lot of damage but noone was hit w/ the shrappnel. Just thought Id mention it to jog everyones mind on busy days.

What type of machine?
After 10+ years I just replaced the bolts on the knives on my 1250 vermeer. I just thought they needed italthough I am not familiar with a standard that dictates switching them. Glad no one was injured.

WHAT!!!!

Very lucky no one was killed.

That is not good.....not good at all.

Cutter bar bolt broke?!? DAYUM!

Never heard of that one before, I think I'll get new bolts for our cutter bar now as well as new knife bolts, those machines scare me.

It is a Bandit 200 disc. It has been repaired but I dont have pics. They were able to keep the disc so just some grinding ,new knives, cutterbar, bolts and some hammering.

Wow!

Could have been bad.

A friend told me years back, "If it's mechanical, it will break."

I have a Bandit 200 and I change the bolts and nuts when I change the blades, not when I rotate them though. I check the hardware on the anvil often. I've heard of hardware ripping through the housing, guys leaping for their lives, watching shrappnel fly through the air while some brave soul sneaks up on the clutch and key. Ugly stuff, check everything, be so careful. Whiz

Mark, same thing happened with a crew i worked with. Cutter bar got loss, knives hit it caused it to come loose. went around and out the top of the disc cover. Opened it up like a tin can. There was a bucket operator near by. he heard it wiz by his head and then saw it tumbling on the ground on the other side of a highway. So luckey no one got hurt. So many people driving by... We got it welded back together. and all the bolts and knives replaced. The kick in the nuts is that when it came back from an authorized brush bandit dealer the cutter bar bolts were loss!!!!!!!!!!!!

i've seen four diferent chippers owned and maintained by three different companies chip blades or bed knives in 10 years! Is that a lot? I used to lean in and fork the chip to the side on occasion until I saw the dents in the galvanised sheet at the far end of the chipper truck and the shrapnel of twisted chipper parts that had been fired out!! This job could'nt get any more dangerous could it???
