Crew Sizes?

I like the three man crew as well. But really for me the jobs dictate what specific or supplemental personnel that I need. If it's a big trim job I'll set it up for a Saturday and bring in another climber for the day. But for a large removal or a long drag I'll grab another groundie. It definitely helps to have friends in the tree world that you can call on for part time work.

Crew sizes? What needs to be done dictates that. But it's a tough call sometimes still. Because expertise of available personal and who manages them can prove the numbers in any crew to be enough or not. The person running the show is the pinion.

We have 3 full time guys including myself, I do all the climbing and 90% of the bucket work and when my feet hit the ground im dragging brush, shoveling grinds, etc, etc.. I feel the 3 man crew is about perfect with the occasional 4th for the real back breaking jobs.

We run a 3-man and a 2-man crew every day. All 5 are climbers, so everyone splits the work pretty evenly. Usually the 2-man crew goes in the bucket/chipper and the 3-man crew in the chip truck/chipper. The trick is to schedule the work so that the 2-man crew doesn't have the heavy brush-dragging jobs for that day. Many days both crews end up finishing the day together, the crew that finishes first always calls the other crew to see if they can help wrap up. I am so unbelievably lucky and fortunate!

i like a 3 man crew also. 2 climbers for pruning and 2 groundies for removals. also you can get away to bid if needed while they clean up as its not a good idea for 1 guy to chip alone

I think the job decides the size of the crew. In your company jobs are priced by the man hour, so if I get a 10 hour job I 5 hours to finish with 2 guy and just over 3 with three. I have found that on large removals 3 guys work great, but If were doing a bunch of small trim jobs I have a easier time getting done in time with 2. For example, if i get a 4 hour trim and I have thee guys I can waste up to an hour or more just in travel time. By the time I get started I have less than 1 hours to finish the job. with Two guys I can spend 1 1/2 hours in the same tree and still finish in time. All that being said we have ten guys on are tree crew, so we can mix and match to suit the jobs. If You are only going with one crew than you have to decide what percentage to big jobs to small jobs you do. If you do a lot of big jobs go with more guys. If not than just stay with 2 you can do a lots with 2 men, and it cost you less if you have any down time.
