o the standards got there in advance, but you're right, this needs to be in the 2013 revision imo. A lot of good science points to reduction rather than removal cuts, if >4" of heartwood is exposed. Shigo called for nodal pruning in 1986, but it hasn't caught on yet.

Adkpk, if your stub cut is to a lateral **or bud** (where a lateral once was) that is chosen in regard to "tree heath and structural integrity", and you think it will better compartmentalize that way,it's a proper reduction cut. Revisiting in a few years and if it starts to decay cutting it back to an enhanced collar; better yet.

But best of all is to cut back to a smaller diameter place tha twill close!
