i am looking for ideas on spar felling crash pads. plywood and tractor tires? pics and any ideas are appreciated. felling 3' and bigger wood over concrete bricks ect will be this pads regular dinner so please keep that in mind.

A guy I help part time makes us carry around a huge tractor tire. What a pain in the . We lost it once on the way to the job, happier than a pig in . Bummed that we found it on the way home. Sometimes we lay alturna mats, then put it on top. Works pretty well.

We've timmayed a couple of track mats dropping big chunks. Normally we just save a bit of the stem and align them in the fall path, or in front and behind stuff like walk ways.

These are 6 truck tires 'tied' together on top of 3 or 4 sheets of 3/4" plywood.
44" Eastern cottonwood at touchdown. The tire and plywood combo have worked like a charm.

Alturnamat on top of straw bales works real well. I've used the mats on top of pallets too. When were done the mats go back on the truck and the rest goes to the dump with the tree

I learned from the MOST INTERESTING CLIMBER IN THE WORLD to only drop large wood pieces on rose petals. Pink being preferred and white O.K. if necessary.

Then again she showed my how to drop pieces so lightly that the petals are really just for me to tread on as I exit the work zone.

Rope together a crib(triangle or sqaure) with the limb wood from the job and then fill crib with chips.
Works really well on dissipating impact and chips are pretty easy to throw around.
Tires and chips on a tarp or plywood might make a good combo.

Tires and plywood have always worked great for us. We haven't used a crash pad in awhile, mostly because the need hasn't been there. Sometimes we lay out a few logs from the job to drop the trunk on to make it easier to cut up, but other than that, we haven't had a real need for a crash pad in awhile.
