I got a call from a good friend of mine this week. He was 15 seconds away from being killed. He works for a roofing supply company in southern Ontario. They were delivering supplies with a 60ft Hiab crane. The unit was lifting insulation when the wind picked up and blew the cable into the 44 KV sub-transmission line. The guy operating the unit was on the wooden deck and luckily he and another worker on the vehicle was ok. Three of the rear tires blew up and a front tire was completely sheared off the truck. There were 2" holes in pavement where the outriggers down. My buddy says the bottom off the truck was lit up like a Christmas tree. He was leaning on the truck 15 seconds earlier and happened to jump unto a forklift just before it occurred.
When Hydro One showed up they found the crane was still in the air within the limits of approach and still running! The operator of the unit was certified to 8000KGs...the unit was a new one and rated to 8500KGs. They had to call in a crane engineer and stow the unit for the guys.
Amazingly no one was hurt and the Ministry of Labour is investigating. They did not charge them on the spot but they do have One year to lay charges.
