crane cable lubrication

I use WD-40, bought in a gallon container, and a plastic bottle type sprayer. This was recommended to me by a professional heavy equipment mechanic and crane dealer who works with a lot of wire rope of all types. I liked the fact I could get it local and the reasonable expense.

When I was going through testing for my license the examiner suggested putting an oil pan inunder the winch and pouring a quart of motor oil(if I remember) over it and then just wipe the remaining line with an oily rag.

I use a spray can of Krown rust oil every now and then.

I read someplace that the cable ( wire rope ) manufacturers recommend a light mineral oil poured over the spool.

I believe that the cables designed with a fiber core (in lieu of a wire strand core) purposely have those fibers drenched with oil to aid in lubrication / rust prevention.

This is what we use, sprays on very thin so it can penetrate to the core then thickens up to provide better protection
