crane accident

I was on a job Friday very near a new Indian casino jobsite. The guys on my job asked me if I had heard..... it seems a tower crane (5 story casino so one of those smaller tower cranes) TIPPED OVER while being set up. Something about jacks being used, over and beyond the normal supplied jacks. No details, it sounds like a real screwup and no fault of the equipment. It got no media coverage. No one was hurt. No pictures, sorry, I couldn't see in the fenced off site, I will fly over and see WTF when it stops snowing! The thing was totaled and was worth 2 million bucks.

Meanwhile, another accident I posted on a while back, (22 ton sign company boom truck and a Motel 6 sign) is still ongoing. I had a job up in the area, and I see going on 2 months later, still no sign, and this is costing Motel 6 money because you can't see the place otherwise, this potential lost business will be figured into the lawsuit I'm guessing.

I read "when it stops snowing" and immediately had to check the date. Geez, man that's crazy, it's June!

It would be awesome to see some pictures of that crane. Sounds like operator error to me too. It wouldn't just tip over, even if it were windy and snowing.

At least, no one got hurt... which is pretty amazing actually.

I flew over there Tuesday, and got this shot, not much to see though. I dropped it off at the construction office, introducing myself as a crane operator and pilot. I didn't want to ask too many embarrassing questions, but I did notice a 200 ton crane sitting there, looks like they are getting ready to pick it back up. It's interesting it sat there for several days, probably to give the insurance and lawyer guys time to go over it. Still nothing in the local media, I find that interesting. They did indicate it was totaled, and I couldn't help but mention that at least scrap metal prices are way up, that seemed to cheer them up! No, they didn't need any crap from me, I just gave them the picture and got out of there!

They were in the process of erecting it, and there was some kind of problem with the base area not being prepared corrected, This problem was half assed using some utility/non crane equipment type of jack, something went wrong, the ground failed and or a jack, and over it went. Like I said it doesn't look bad, but that is 2 million bucks worth of tower crane headed to the scrapper. It was windy that day BTW, and now that I think about, the direction it fell is the direction the high winds that day would have pushed, could be coincidence though.

This is an area I fly over a lot, it will be interesting to see what happens next, word is another tower crane is on its way.
