Considering a Working Vacation

Steve Connally

Been here much more than a while
I was considering maybe a working vacation for a couple days. A chance to meet some folks and get some more experience in areas I don't get to explore much. I was thinking about trying to expand my knowledge of hazard trees and working outside my comfort level. My goal is to better educate myself on stuff that initially I don't think should be climbed but ultimately could be much safer than I thought it was. I think these skills can only be gained through mentoring from a very experienced climber who has done a lot of hazard trees. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree so to speak and should just continue to listen to my gut. I guess the point is, I need to find out if I am making an educated decision with the trees I won't climb or is it merely overly cautious.

The second area I would like to tweak is very broad canopy climbs and the proficient use of mechanical redirects. I can hold my own but there are guys out there who have mastered it and I would love to pick up some tips.

Just thinking out load and seeing what options are out there. I love this profession and its my passion. I want to work along side others who share my feelings. I'm just talking maybe 3 working days tops. Anyone have any thoughts. I'm in Virginia

Steve we would love to have you back. I have nothing really interesting right now but will let you know if anything turns up

However never assume somebody else knows better than you no matter how much experience they have , you are up there assessing and more importantly risking your life, go with your gut

I am in a similar situation myself, unfortunately I don't have the option to take a working vacation. I have not been climbing for very long but have already met the skill level of the other climbers in my company and am training a new one. For now, for me, youtube and this forum are just about the only things I get knowledge from but nothing can beat hands on experience.

I have been presented with some interesting trees in interesting situations. Combining my knowledge learned from here and a few youtubers I have been able to put these trees on the ground safely and under my belt. After each one I feel like I can take on anything, but I must remain humble every tree is its own beast.

However Steve, I think your idea is a great one and I look forward to reading about or watching the new experiences you get to have. Nothing beats experience.

p.s. happy mother's day I know you've got two jobs and I can't imagine how hard that is
