I was chatting with a Terex dealer yesterday and he gave me these:

Re: Concept Terex \"Boom Truck\"

It seems Terex is getting more pro active in their engineering. I was told once by long time booom truck "experts", that Terex's forte was waiting for Manitex or National to finalize a design, and then they would slightly re-engineer it and put their name on it. If you look at the way a 30 or 35 ton Terex is setup, it is very Manitex like, I mean almost identical as to outrigger and other details. I see they also have a new 23 ton design, and it, like the 60 tonner, appears to be a clean page design.

Nothing wrong with this BTW, a proven design, with a few improvements is a good thing. I'm just saying something over at Terex seems to have changed engineering and marketing wise. Interesting!

Re: Concept Terex \"Boom Truck\"

Very interesting idea. The medium sized truck crane is getting pushed out the door by the, - medium sized truck crane.

Instead of using a Oshkosh or Autocar carrier, the manufacturers are using a cheaper "off the rack" carrier from Volvo or Pacific Car. This results in a unit better able to handle highway speeds, and offers a nicer cab.

The necessity of needing two drops raises some concerns. I have learned that drops, especially rear mounted drops, can cause "bridging" and result in the crane getting stuck on even moderately hilly terrain. This is especially the case with the monster wheel bases of some of these trucks.

At some point, someone will come to the conclusion that these over-sized boom trucks would be best served by the addition and use of a boom dolly.

Then we have come full circle back to a truck crane with a different name

Re: Concept Terex \"Boom Truck\"

Yes i agree about the tag and pusher axles, I hope that they do as manitex did with their 50 ton and make a tri drive model or maybe a tri drive tandem steer depending on the net weight of this crane.

Re: Concept Terex \"Boom Truck\"

Very cool design from Terex. Interesting to see the X-Style outriggers, even though they make more sense I believe. Many cranes of the 500 ton and above class use X-Style outriggers, so it makes sense that they would try that same style on a smaller platform. I'm not a crane expert/engineer, but I believe the X-Style provide a more stable platform for the crane to work off of. Just my observation though.

And I do agree with the tag/pusher axles. For the size and weight of this thing, it seems that a tri-axle version with optional boom dolly would be the ticket here.

Re: Concept Terex \"Boom Truck\"

Drive thru the Texas oil fields and you can see why the need for higher capacity "boom trucks" exists. Now you can buy a 60 ton that will do 90 mph down the highway.

Tadano used to make one, I don't see it on there website anymore

Re: Concept Terex \"Boom Truck\"

National has a 55t that looks highly similar to that Terex picture, its a beast.

Re: Concept Terex \"Boom Truck\"

dave your liebherr would maneuver into places that mile-long crossover wouldn't even dream about. with the power options available a 60t hyd truck crane would also get into places that long beast couldn't.

Re: Concept Terex \"Boom Truck\"

Very true, but if you worked in an area where job sites were a few hundred miles apart, having the option to build a high hp, highway friendly 60 tonner with customizable axles is pretty sweet.

I visit family in a small town in Montana, last trip I was talking to some guys about cranes, they told me the biggest crane they had locally was a 40 ton, about 50 miles away. If they need bigger they would have to order them from over a hundred miles away.

These "big" boom trucks are a great choice is you do a lot of travel and have large open flat work sites. It's also nice to be able to build the chassis to meet you needs and local weight laws. It would be tough to use these in a city or on any residential tree job

Re: Concept Terex \"Boom Truck\"

I work for a taxi crane company and we just got one of these crossover 6000 cranes mounted on a twin steer kenworth with a tridem drive.

Now there coming out with a crossover 8000. Upper from a 80T T780 truck crane on the same x pattern outriggers mounted on a commercial truck, tandem/tridem style.
