Competition

Hopefully this is not a sign of things to come: I submitted a bid of 5200 to remove major deadwood from about 15 Cottonwoods at a local golf course. They , in the past, have been wicked cheapskates to work for.Knowing this I thought I bid it tight. There was a big broken limb over parking that they were anxious to get out. A few days later I went by to see if it had been done and it was still there so I made a follow up call. The super told me he hired some one and I asked him to share if he was comfy doing that. He was and said he hired a guy for 1200 to do the job.
Tree Maestro calls me a couple of days later and tells me he sees the guy doing the job out of a genie lift with a power pruner and that he knows how much I like to spy on the competition. Bingo- all the excuse I need to jump on my bicycle and goof it off for a couple of hours.
I get up there to the course and see these fellas workin and cruise up to have a look see.
Guy in lift has it full extended and is sawing a 12" top out basically right over his head. Piece comes down barely missing flimsy base of lift which was set up on soft golf course turf and nothing under the out riggers.
I hung out and watched for a while and debated talking to the ground guy in a way that wouldn't be too confrontational but didn't really see that happening. They both saw me watching them not really knowing that I was a bidder on the job or tree guy.
Poor dumb ground guy darting underneath platform guy - no communication whatsoever.
I am torn between calling the guy and telling him how much bread he left on the table and that he needed to get some training or he was probably not going to live very long. As well as calling the super and giving him the details of how this guy was violating practically every known safety standard and exposing them to huge liability .
In the end I have decided to probably let Darwinism thin the heard naturally and if I get the chance try to have a friendly chat with homie if I get the chance.
How's it goin y'all it's been a while since I have visited?

Same story in the Twin Cities. Cut-throat. The people who should know better are taking the risk of hiring yayhoos to save a buck. I have seen a marked increase in unsafe, untrained, unqualified "tree cutters" the past two years here.

For quite some time I frowned upon turning in unlicensed tree companies. At this point in the game, it's simply protecting my livelyhood. Plenty of people who shouldn't be in this business, but get a lot of work because they are the cheapest in town.

Same things going on here too. Did a drive-by bid the other day. Pine removal, backyard, no access. My price was 750. Couldn't help but notice a bid on the front door, so I took a peek. 400 from a well know competitor. They are also known to tip cranes and hack trees, but it says right on the bid "#1 Tree Service in Phoenix" and "Certified Arborists on staff". No way they are carrying all the neccessary insurance, otherwise they'd be losing money...

ALOT of competition here, but they all advertise "Certified Arborists" or ISA, BBB, etc membership. but when you see the pics on the website (or see them in the field) They have NO hardhats or other PPE, and they are butchering trees.

If you doubt they have the creds from ISA but are advertising such then call ISA and inquire of them. Basically if the answer is no then you have justification to let the ISA know that these companies are breaching their regs.

Its very unfortunate, but just because they are "Certified Arborists" doesnt mean that they follow the rules. Its a bad situation. We have a company here with Jersey plates on their trucks that says they are Certified, voted #1 tree service and all that jazz. I saw their crew working Friday, and they had no PPE at all. This guy uses roll off dumpsters as advertizing, and is getting work in our area because of it. I just feel bad for the customer, and the substandard work they are getting.
