Compact Horse chestnut

A relatively unimpressive horse chesnut, (another victim of bleeding canker) but with lots of branches. Underneath was not only paved but also had a glass/green-house just a meter or so away which we did our best to cover with rubber mats’. All but the last 3 sections had to be carefully lowered and manouevred.

An addition pull rope looks to be missing but the guys would have had to be stood at least in the middle of the road each time in order to gain sufficient leverage….for that reason they managed without.

Thankfully we were able to slide out a couple of fence panels enabling us to drag the branches straight onto the road.

Nice weather, straight-forward rigging. Nick and Patrick on the road, Leonie is working the ropes.

Oh yeah, if MB were still here he would probably ask why I couldn't just push off that last log? and yet again I would reply: Butch, it was too heavy for me!

Killer work. Are you balancing those limbs to come down and sit horizontal on purpose? Probably yes, your a balancing magician.

Thanks

Taitree, this is the camera http://www.vio-pov.com/

Brendonv, yes, most were balanced to give us a better clearance from the stuff underneath....although I did have to make some a little top heavy to help initiate that first bit of movement.

I like your camera views Reg. I'm learning by trial and error with my Vio. I've lost some good video because of the button not responding the way I need when I need to. So, I think I am going to just record the whole way through to avoid it. Are you constantly recording short clips when you are up there?

How often to you tie off limbs with a half hitch & 3 wrap timber hitch? --Just curious.

Just short clips for me....in fact, pretty much what you see but with a few seconds skimmed either side.

You really should send that remote back to your dealer because it should work every time until the battery fails. In the mean time, I'd try just stop/start reconding individual clips on the unit rather than just letting it record the whole thing....the editing will be tedious otherwise and the files huge. When my remote battery went down I just worked the main unit, stop - start - turn off (to save battery)....it was real easy to manage.

On branches 3 wraps has always been adequate for me, so long as the wraps/tucks extend round so they're at least opposite the bite where the self-trapping qualities of the knot are best utilized. On wider stuff I'll put more in.

Nice video Reg.

I always pickup something good watching your stuff.
For instance, when I tie on multiple pieces I usually cut them bottom up but watching you do it top down made me realize the rope loads more gradually that way. Thanks.

3 wraps with your half hitch is good. I use a half hitch with a steel carab choked off. I'm too impatient these days for knots & hitches.

And for those of you who don't like the usage of using carabiners, I am aware of not loading the gate. Thanks.

It was difficult to see the attachment on the three limb take. I've used marls for holding the limbs like that, but not since I started using snap-on gear.

One thing about using the marls though, the line has to stay loaded to hold each piece of the work.

Jamin, There is a lot of trial and error using the helmet cams for the first time. And I know how frustrating it is when having lost a good action sequence because of a technical difficulty.

I'm not sure how responsive the feel of the activation button is on your remote, but I see Reg doesn't wear gloves and maybe that might be a clue to why you're not getting all the clips you think you should.

Yeah, that was an awesome vid, as usual, Reg, though I would personally still like to see a little more climbing action included.

You do a great job of picking the right booms, and the tying limbs in the middle reduces shock load in addition to the advantage you mentioned.

VERY precise and impressive work.

Oh, and I learned watching this to put a stopper knot in the end of the rope when doing the timber hitches- cool!

Yeah reg, i would like to see more climbing and maybe even some footage of you setting up. If your into taking requests.

Always fun, and always a learning experience watching thanks.

Good observation Gerry. I think you have a point. Because I have resorted to taking off a glove a couple of times. Hmm... I think we'll be seeing some videos from Colorado soon.

Awesome!!! Let's see some!!!

I dont know where you carry the unit on your person Jamin but be sure to hold the remote as close as possible to it when you press the button and make sure you hold down the buttons for at least half a second, you should be able to hear a faint beep if you take off your earmuffs.

I actually dropped mine on Saturday from way up in this sweet chestnut into thick undergrowth....I thought 'well thats gone forever' but when I went to have a quick look at the end of the day I somehow just walked right to it....I wonder would I have been so lucky if it had been my car keys!

Cory/CountryBoy, the climbing footage really doesn't look all that when you actually play it back, consider also that I do as little as what I can get away with and then it might seem kinda wasteful to to include in the 10 min max duration for youtube. Its not that I dont have a good look though it all afterwards, it just seems there's never anything that looks interesting enought to include.
