Compact Bulldog OAR

I used it natural crotch on a spruce last week, not a great test because of the pitch and rough bark texture. It was grabby, wide open to get it running. using 11.7 yale

I will say it handled the pitch really well, better than any rig I've used before

I think it would benefit from a friction saver of some sort above for use as an MRS device.

Hi everyone, i'm a young treeclimber from italy, i'd like to ask and know if there any possibility to buy the Bulldog Oar somewhere, i'm using an Akimbo since one year and it feels sometimes nervous, not very smooth on the rope on resinous trees, i'd like to try this new Srt|Drt setup, if anyone can help i'd appreciate very much, thanks!

I have been waiting for someone to produce a device that will allow me to seamlessly go from SRT to DdRT without the need to add or remove anything from my system..In SRT mode I need it to effortlessly follow me around like an obedient dog, and in DdRT mode I need to offer smooth manual tending akin to a HC setup...Is this it? Very intrigued here Gordon....

The SpiderJack can do that, if I recall correctly. I believe @Colin1234567 uses one that way?

I'm inclined to keep the tending teardrop at the top like the BOLA, especially with the nano swivel at the bottom, as this allows 360 degrees of rotation underneath without twisting the double lines above. Also the crab is then nicely above the device, and it self tends like a dog on a leash : )

I agree that having a tending teardrop on the top seems to be the way to go..I assume this is only doable with the 4 arm version?

The 3 arm version could have the teardrop at the top, I would add a ss spine link at the top of the solid spine link, so that the teardrop would be at the end of what amounts to a 1.25" long ss tether.

I guess my next question is pros/cons of 3 arm versus 4 arm... Your thoughts would be much appreciated Gordon...

Rico , I think the pros for the three arm OAR would be less expensive and lighter and a bit easier to manually tend (and release), than the four arm OAR.
The four arm OAR would grip a bit more weight.

I wish the spiderjack could run srt. The only time mine is ever loaded on a single length of rope is I when I’m standing on a spar in spikes and lanyard to satisfy the double tie in requirement. You can shave a few seconds here and there. That’s a @sherwood7 special right there.

Anecdotally, I have another friend who threw a wrench on his spiderjack and burned up a brand new clutch in one day- not advisable.

Since we are talking dream devices, I would love to see a clutch based device designed for srt only. You can’t expect hybrid devices to perform like the specialized devices that already exist, and the spiderjack is a Ferrari. Btw thanks @surveyer for your innovative spirit. Fan boy here.

Does the original bdb not tend well for you drt? With 11.7 Yale mine is seamless (160lbs).

I LOVE my Bone, and it is my favorite mechanical for SRT....In DdRT not so much. Like many of the other SRT mechanicals the Bone will function in DdRT mode when needed, but its not really what it was designed for.

All the great DdRT systems I have used have one thing in common.. An attachment point on the top of the device which pulls the system up from the top as you pull down on the tail of your climbing line.
For me this creates a DdRT setup that will simply follow me up a tree once I reach 50 -60 ft. This is not possible if your setup is flopping around because it is not being pulled from the top.

This IMHO is why the Bone, Runner, Akimbo, and HH cannot compete with a hitch climber, Zigzag, or SpiderJack in DdRT mode..The only SRT device I know of that has this upper attachment point is the Unicender, which for various reasons has never appealed to me.

If the Oar can operate at/near the Bones level in SRT mode, while also giving a hitch climber setup a good run for its money in DdRT mode then Gordon has just answered my prayers.
