Compact Bulldog Bone

when i take a break during an ascent, I push the BDB up and spread the arms, before sitting in it,
I've just been sitting back with confidence and ready to face the consequence. Works like it was made for the job.:spiderman:Gordon has upgraded my bone and I've been wrenching in its absence climbed a tree today that was redirect city and I was really missing the bone when the wrench got jammed in a tight crotch , I shoulve taken it off to perform redirect ,but it is too much work to do that , unclip , oh shit don't drop hitch climber , unwrap prussik , clip all that back together ,take off wrench , redirect and put it all back together ..you know the drill .Damned if I don't feel like a dog without a bone . happy its on its way back home so I can slobber all over it again .:payaso:

Yeah, I'd like to get the bone performing like that. Kinda familiar move for me to make sure it's biting first but handsfree is definitely my end goal.

The wrench. Our first love. It might be in a museum one day. Kidding. Not sure how I'd do SRT without one or the other.

Thinking more about it, along with pulling back on the spine instead of just pulling downward, in this situation, I may have ended up in a position similar to your avatar photo where I really wasn't taking as much weight off the rope below the BDB making it harder for the bollards to bend the rope to gain a bite. Also, with the BDB in a position similar to the climber's hands in your photo, the angle in the rope may "pinch" the arms making it harder for them to separate. Add each small piece to the scenario and the sum must have been just enough to create the situation....

I was finally able to replicate the situation that had prevented the bdb from grabbing.

By keeping my body and legs fairly straight and laying back similar to your avatar...

...the combination of rope tension below the bdb, angles and straight pull back on the spine was able to keep the arms from opening and grabbing sometimes (but not always). It's not a situation where you could take a fall and it couldn't happen if you were climbing limbs and fell back onto the bdb. You have to be connected to the rope below the bdb, hold on above it and lay back with a straight body.

If you bend your knees a bit and sit down into your saddle or do anything else even remotely close to normal, the bdb grabs every time.

Great product Gordon. Thanks again.

Before I left Expo I got the Rock Exotica mini swivel. The one with the o ring in the small end. Tomorrow I'll install it with some spacers to keep it centered. Then it'll be climb time and a report

Had a short go with cougar blue. It feels slightly smaller than the aztec I'm on and smooth cover so I expected it to run well. With the 3/4 bollard it grabbed good and I really had to fight the arm down to release and it was very jerky/jumpy. A few times up and down and it got better but still not smooth. Maybe the 5/8 bollard would work better but I probably won't try it, I'm almost out of cotter pins and I like my aztec too much so the blue might go.

Yes, Cougar and 5/8" bollard is the combo for sure.

I have about 8 bones left with pending orders on two or three of these. about half the Bone parts had 5/16" holes already drilled in the arms so I use 3/8" button head allen head bolts on those, I use 1/4" carriage bolts on the others. Glad you like yours Will.

After that will everyone have to wait for cheap Chinese knock-offs?

Or perhaps there could be a deal with Bing and a mass produced RopeDog...

Cheers! smiling here. Mac said the Bone was Boss as I was making an oversize Bone and the name seemed to fit. Now Aaron you have mentioned an Eagle Bone and I have made a double sided Bone that may be useful DRT, and it looks like well.......an Eagle with two "wings" and a tail.
