Diagram to show how the friction hitches are based on a coil(4 uninterupted turns), and 1 other choking part that interupts the loading to 1 leg of the coil. The self tending class of hitches, also use that preceding 'buffer' to the coil oin 1 leg, to choke down on the other leg to coil; just with different strategies.

Distel and Schwab to add to the previous set. These simpler hitches only buffer loading to top coil, bottom coil gets full loading of that leg's half of your weight.

These are good for seeing the similarites as far as mechanics, perhaps developing other knots by them. But also, for the newbie to see that the base configuration is the same. There is not this overload of half dozen + hitches to L-earn here, but rather 1 type of mechanics with a half dozen added on different versions of half hitch placemeant to finish under the coil. i think lots less to learn and be confused by in that light.
