Come Sale Away with Me

In terms of small businesses, I have ethical concerns with any sales arborist who doesn't have equity in the business. The person who deals directly with the customers is the face of the business. From the customer's point of view that person 'is' the business. Simple as that. Everyone else is just the 'workers'. To trust your business to an employee or a subcontractor is crazy. They are never going to care as much about your business as you are.
That may be true, but it impossible to scale a business if the owner is going out on all the sales calls. I feel that if the pay structure and the training is right, it can be a logical next step for someone inside your organization. I personally would never hire someone new for this position.

I agree with this but it also is not always true. I’m in a position where I was brought in to climb for a property management company where they don’t have a tree service branch yet. We have discussed a deal where I will be responsible for bidding and for climbing. I will see commission for sales but won’t have a real stake in the company but I have always looked at a position like this in the way that if I sell work right it insures I still have a job and the company stays afloat. I know it may be a strange kind of mindset but I know if I don’t do what is right then my co workers and employer struggles along with their families. Bidding and doing the work to the right standards go hand in hand in making sure the company runs smoothly.
