Cold weather gloves

Well I tried the handwarmers as suggested, and by 3pm my fingers were warm! It coincidentally was up to 50° by then tho .

@Boomslang im starting to think i might be in the same boat as you. I was bundled up super well in wool and synthetic layers today, my core stayed warm (except for the hour I spent standing around and coaching a newer climber through a little removal) but I could Not get my fingers or toes to warm up
You'll know you have it when you can't use your hands.

I still remember the day 5 years ago when, after a run, I came home and I couldn't grab the zipper clasp on my jacket. Here I am staring at my fingers telling them to move and nothing happens. It's a fucked feeling.

On the plus side, it's a recognized medical diagnosis. And since the only known treatment is avoiding the cold it's a perfect excuse not to work during winter.

I honestly haven't met a glove that worked for me as far as being able to tie knots, ascend, feed chipper... keeping my core warm has worked really well for me... in particular having a merino wool gator and puffy ass vest. And a thermos of tea. I don't wear gloves even in the cold. But if the high is going to be freezing or below, honestly I just try to do something else that day if I can help it.

They do take a while to warm up, they are activated by air which is blocked somewhat in a glove.
I typically open them up in my car before I leave my driveway. They are warm by the time I get out of the work truck. Sometimes blowing into them through the glove gives a boost of air.

To help keep hands warm, carry an extra pair of gloves inside your coat and swap them every time your hands get too cold.

The handwarmers I get are meant to last for 11 hours (marketing department number!). Getting them open, shaken, and in gloves (i believe they need oxygen) before leaving the house is much better than waiting until working.

Hot drinks, a non-thermally insulated mug, and hpt snacks and meals can help.
A thermos of hot soup is good.
Canned soup is easy.
A camp stove in the truck is smart.

Preheat the thermos with hot water before adding soup, broth, tea, etc..

I’ve had a suit that I bought at Kmart in 1989 when I started my tree service. I wore it today when it was 25 degrees and blowing 40 mph. Keeps your whole body toasty warm. Wore my turtle fur around my neck and my hard hat liner and I was fine. i wear thin gloves but when it’s super cold I’ll wear warmer gloves when needed.that suit holds all the heat in.

On that C to F conversion, 0C is 32F and at -40 they're both the same. Also parked tires freeze flat spots into them - clunk clunk clunk down the road. Starting goes something like Rrrrr-rrrr-rrrr thump thump thumptiy Rrrrrr thumpity "crap I let off the key too soon" -repeat with starter going till the combustion overcomes the oil drag. oh yeah, gloves instead of mittens is guaranteed frostbite. Can't say I miss it.

anyone ever try using the combo glove/mittens that flip over the fingers like the 90s kids had? they make them for hunters and ice anglers, with flip-back thumbs even

combine that with some suede mitten protectors overtop to extend the wear of the glove, a few years ago i got these from an ontario sheep farm and used them to protect some expensive snowboarding trigger mittens, got three winters out of them cutting and dragging brush
