clumps on branches

Hi - I'm attaching a photo of a tree in our backyard. The branches that have these clumps don't grow leaves, and over the last couple of years, it seems to be getting worse. I'm concerned that this tree needs treatment, but not sure what to do (hence the long delay in doing anything) - can anyone tell me what this is and how it's treated? Do we prune the bad branches or does the whole tree have to be treated or removed? Will it spread to other nearby trees? Please help - thanks!

Gouty oak gall. I may have it spelled wrong or even have the wrong gall. Very hard to control. Usually needs to be trimmed out of the tree. It usually doesn't do much damage unless populations are really high. I can't help you on chemical treatments, check with your State land grant university.

Thanks for the quick post! I can't use chemicals since we have a dog - hopefully I can have the branches removed. I appreciate your help!
