Re: climbing world\'s tallest tree

Whats the avg. range on a crossbow like that? Its hard for an east coast climber to imagine climbing something that large. So cool! I'd love to do that someday!

Re: climbing world\'s tallest tree

Cabellas or similiar mail order sporting goods outlet. The crossbow vaires in power consideerably, from the small pistol type to the double fid 400 pounders.

There's only one power setting with them. full power. And it's generally a lob shot over one side of the tree, then spending some time with binoc's determining if the line is over a suitable limb. Seldom accomplished with a single shot.

For setting lines high aloft a person would fair better using a compound bow and fiberglass bolts. A lot more accurate and you can feather the shot.

Even the big shot can set a line 200 feet.

I'd love to climb a tree that large too - a couple of Dougies round here touch 200ft, so I'll get round to it some day soon. I was reading the Ness website about bows - they seem the best option with a reel mount. I'd love to have one and go big tree hunting with TFX and the Frog. I'm not sure about dangerous weapons licencing over here though, I'll have to check it out. Whats the status in the states with bows? Seeing as you have free access to guns, they'd be the same, right?

When crossbows first became popular over here, there were wildfowl on waters swimming around with crossbow bolts through their necks! Caused complaints and restrictions.

Re: climbing world\'s tallest tree

I have a crossbow that I use for hunting as they are legal in my area. It is a VERY accurate weapon. Ducks? Necks? Arrows? Lunacy, I do declare!!! Whomever would shoot ducks w/ a crossbow would surely be "plinking" and therefore killing for sport! Major faux pas in my book! I will probably never see an opportunity to use my bow on a tree, but I am curious what draw weight is used? Mine is adjustable between 100-150#. Good enough?

Re: climbing world\'s tallest tree

Buying bows here in the states is easy, I don't think you even have to be 18 around here. But every state has it's own laws on that sort of thing. Crossbows are easy to buy as well, however, they are pretty expensive and aren't legal to use for much unless you have a disability.

What kind of disability?
Are cougars and bears attracted to the squeak of wheelchair spokes or something?

Re: climbing world\'s tallest tree

Not exactly sure what kind of disability you need to have. I would imagine it would be something like having a disabled parking permit for your car. I know people with one arm can get one. Plus, in Wisconsin Disabled hunters get to do all sorts of cool stuff, like hunt from vehicls and such.
