Climbing with foot problems

Hey guys, quick question for you. Dad recently broke his right foot after an accident at a planting job. It is a clean break and should heal no problem. Broke along the top bone I believe. Long story short, he has to deal with it for at least 6 weeks. They gave him a big boot type thing instead of a cast and said to be careful.

Dad was wondering what others have done that have had similar problems(if anyone has). He would like to try and climb some, but would rather stay off it as much as possible. He read that CrazyJimmy had some foot problem I believe when he attended the crane seminar in MA. Just curious how others have dealt with this.

Thanks!!

He should be carefull for the 6 weeks it takes for the bone to grow. If he's unlucky he might get unwanted pressure on it, and break it up again, adding 6 new weeks + possible complications.

I broke my ankle in a climbing accident some years ago, and after the 6 weeks I did to little strecthing and specific training. I thought working and climbing would be good enough, but today my right ancle is a bit stiffer than my left.

Best of luck!

The doctor said stay off of it for 6 weeks. That doctor went to 8 years of schooling to be able to come up with that diagnosis and for some reason you thought it a good idea to get a second opinion from us?

Tell dad to relax, rest and hire a contract climber for a few weeks if needed. No reason to rush things like this or it Will be a problem for the rest of his life

Ps. Elastic resistance bands are a huge plus for therapy.

Usually I try to cut Marc down a peg or two because of his hideous looks and ridiculous allegiance to the NHL, but I think he is offering some sound advice here.

Listen to the doc, don't do a Daniel.

True, but he is called Crazy Jimmy for a reason.

I don't think his was broken. It probably wasn't far off though.

I don't understand why he would NEED to climb, or do anything outside of point to the work that needs to be done, maybe bid some jobs. He should have some good quality employees by now!!! Oh....and listen to the Doc!!!

Good diet and hydration, particularly calcium as dictated by the doctor. I've mentioned my friend before who was calcium deficient and his broken thumb barely healed in 6 weeks, requiring more time in the cast, and more atrophy.

Seems like he should let it rest for at least a while.

He's probably used to a lot of physical work. A gym routine for the rest of his body might be worth considering for general fitness, stress, and maybe its a good time to work on those antagonistic muscles that we tend to neglect, core strengthening (who can't use a stronger core, and wouldn't want him to jump into it after he can bear weight and hurt something else), and some many of us neglect our rotator cuffs. Stretching, too.

Hope he heals well, firstly, and fast, secondly. He'll need good feet to carry him for the rest of his days, which are very long compared to 6 weeks of healing time.

I always hurt something so Im kinda use to it.I hurt both my big toes last year from MMA training and climbed for months with that.I used alot of tape and ice.Recently I had my foot crushed and I kept climbing-well because I have to.Then the other nite I had my toenail jammed letting the dog out.I had to rip it off and Im still not healed from the foot injury.Ive honestly limped for 13 months. But because of a lack of skilled climbers, ive climbed more the last few months than I have in 10 years. But it all depends on an idividuals tolerance I guess and If you got someone else to take up the slack.

Thanks guys. He's going to try and stay off it as much as possible. Just going to sit in the truck and direct. Set up jobs on the weekends also when I can come and climb and work. He feels better about sitting around when I'm there, since he knows he doesn't have to stand around and direct me most of the time.

Hey rangerdanger

Wish him all the best and a speedy recovery from Tr33Climb3r.

(not that he knows who I am but it is from one tree guy to another)
