Hi Benj
My last women apprentice.(Gone to Korea to teach).
Would purposely leave her "off the shelf boots" to get into my 2nd pair of Viberg Riggers. She loved them.
They have a layer of urethane in the sole for extra cushioning.
The 7oz leather compared to the 3 oz leather means you get more than twice the leather thickness, more protection and comfort for the bruising and beating your feet take especially when wedging into tight crotches and Spur climbing.
These boots will last a lifetime if you take good care of the leather. Remove the mud as soon as possible. Drying out of mud and etc. will pull the natural oil out of the leather. And treat the leather regularly.
The women in the office/store can guide you thru sizing, so you get a sure fit.

I own 3 pair of Wesco currently, and have owned 2 others in the past 10 years. They have sat on a shelf for close to 8 months since I bought my off the shelf Limmer Standards. Best boots I have owned (so far). http://www.limmerboot.com/#

They also do custom fit handmade boots, 12-18 month waiting list if im not mistaken? Wesco offers this service as well, the others listed below may or may not, im not sure. http://www.limmercustomboot.com/

Other than that you have:
Wesco
Whites
Nicks
Hoffmans
Vibergs

All are great boots, I prefer handmade and hand sewn over machine made machine sewn.

for climbing id go with asolos. with removals on gaffs go with a stiffer boot with maybe a steel shank in the sole to keep some of the pressure off the bottom of your foot.

Do you spend enough time in gaffs to warrant buying 16 inch boots? A hiking or backpacking boot is much more comfortable for pruning and ground duties.

Limmers all the way! Get them with the reinforced D-rings. I’m having Peter install them on my pair next week. Awesome support and really comfortable. Those guys know there stuff!

FWIW I blew through 2 pair of Asolo in 1 year. Bought the first pair, TPS 520, lasted under 6 months soles ripped off. Bought the next step up, so I was told by the sales guy, Powermatic 500 (which oddly enough arent on the Asolo site any longer) and those lasted a little longer, maybe 6.5 months. Rubber toe cap came off and soles seperated from leather like a flip flop.

Backpacker magazine just put out their "Gear Guide" for 2011. Last page is their "Things we Covet" grid list. Under Extravagant they list handmade boots made by Limmer Boot or Esatto.

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE COMMENTS ON THIS SUBJECT...... it really helped

Hey benj, glad to hear that you take pride in your line clearance work.

I have respect for what those guys do, just not for the way that they sometimes do it.

Keep educating them for all of us.

If you are in spikes, Wesco is the boot in my opinion.

I have not tried limmers, this is the first I've looked at them. by look alone, they look like crap.

Wesco's last me about two years.

I love them.

2 years is a very long time for me. Other similar boots, redwings, carolinas and other cheaper boots, last 6 months. Honestly.

I usually buy 12 inch Wescos, with steel toe and steel shank and heal support.

Can't wait to get my first custom Wescos, now coming soon. First Custom boots ever. Custom colors and materials.

Want a secret?

Buy Wescos from http://www.fwlsp.com/category/wesco-boots
Far West Line Specialties.

I called
Wesco many years ago and asked what supplier sells the most of their boots so I could get a decent price.

They told me Far West Line Specialties and I've bought many many pairs from them over the years.

I messed around a few months ago on Wesco's website and built the Wesco boot of my dreams.

Then I clicked on finish and it was a $700 boot. Wow, I said, no way I'm I ever going to pay $700 for a boot.

I happened to run it buy FWLS and they said, "hey, give us the specifications and we can put in the custom order with our discount".

Well, it was just enough discount for me to go ahead with the order.

Now, I should have some nice boots coming soon in April.

Limmers look like they'd take as long to break in as most boots last. The upper appears to be all one piece of leather, which I have found, means they last for a freaking long time. Not a huge fan of black, they look like I could wear them into the pit at a Vandals show...or some Aryan 4th Reich meeting...but they do look they would last and be comfortable after about 2 years break in time.

Oh my God you guys, such evil talk about Limmers....just kidding, I find it funny really.

I remember when Bull first posted his black Limmers last summer, I thought that they were a throwback to something that was way outdated....I couldn't have been more wrong. They are dated (in looks maybe) for a reason, they last and can be rebuilt over and over again. One piece of stitched leather all the way around, no other seems. That's what seperates the Limmers from other boots really.

Bull has the Limmer Standards and I have the Limmer Lights. Mine come in a chocolate brown color, but I like the black as well.

They really don't take long to break in and I plan on buying another pair soon, probably the Standards.
