Climbing and Hunting

Thats why you work alone so much jesse!
When I have time to hunt I use climbing skills. To be honest thats why I bought my first set of spikes years before I knew any better. Thankfully I only used them a couple timesused because the cutout scared the daylights out of me. I haven't done any hunting the last 2 years so I haven't really figured a good system for hunting if you want to be concerned with scent etc.

Have you seen the safety systems and quality of the tree stands they sell. I suppose because hunters are not working there is no quality control. I can't get free climbing out of my system since being a kid and do that hunting sometimes. I've went to ground blinds though. If you place them on a hill top they work good and are more confortable except on the strong wind days from the wrong direction.

Hunting and wearing furs are a really good thing. It means you have an intact ecosystem healthy enough to support such activities. Synthetic clothes, petroleum, urban sprawl, road construction, large scale agriculture, human population growth. These will be the cause of our demise. You have to look beyond the cuteness.

Yep, if you like meat, you should hunt and do the diligence. But don't kid yourself, hunting isn't fair, humans have the advantage... so do raptors and cats.

Killing animals isn't very easy for me but the fact is, meat production is THE most expensive way to produce food ever devised. It's also FAR more brutal than hunting. It's the ugliest business imaginable.

Wow! Not the direction I was looking for for the thread but interesting non the less.
Unless your eyes are on the side of your head (like all prey animals in the wild are), then you are a designed hunter. All wild animals that kill other animals have the eyes directly in front (i.e. humans, cats, dogs). And when it comes to birds, those with the best eye sight are predatory. Besides I'm a bow hunter, guns are too easy.

Boreality - I have seen the crap that the hunting industry sends out with their stands and the Hunter Safety Systems stuff. Its really bad and I've sent them letters telling them so. So far no response back. I'm not surprised, but I figured it wouldn't hurt.

Great point. I make it a point to "Hunt" for my prey...

So back to this hunting with climbing gear in stead of using stands... Anyone? What do you use? Thanks for the input thus far!

I don't hunt with my climbing gear... I have considered it but too much to worry about scent wise etc, but it sure makes hanging stands and trimming shooting lanes nice and easy!

The arb gear would be good for canopy access but I'd want a bosun seat at least as you'd end up sitting motionless for hours. I think you could be risking suspension trauma or getting numb toes.
How about rigging up a pungi spike log to swing down and take out the elk Rambo style. Just kidding, totally illegal but make a heck of a video. Or a spring pole leg snare. Disclaimer: Don't do this you'll get your buddy.

I agree plus think of all the noise with all the metal...

the private land we have in northern wisconsin is 60 acres and last summer we put up gun deer stands using our climbing and rigging gear to hoist things up and we were secure the whole time...put up some really nice stands in a matter of no time

since the gun deer season is getting slow for us I bought a hoyt powerhawk in january so I am really looking forward to bow season!

there are actualy some hunting saddles on the market now. a buddy of mine uses one out in iowa, there not too far off from my cougar. the back of the saddle has a sheet of leather that forms sort of a seat and it adjusts in the tree with a friction hitch! i will have to get the name of the saddle if anyones intrested

The one you are talking about is made by Trophyline USA. They may be out of business though. I have one, but the material and design is cumbersome to me. But my Uncle thinks its the cats meow...
