Climbing a dead tree with ice gear...

Youtube vid of a guy climbing a dead tree with ice axes and crampons. He even gets the front points in a couple of times.

It never occured to me before... and it still doesn't. I'm sticking with gaffs and a lanyard.

That looks to be real productive.

Yeah... but then ice climbing's not exactly a productive pursuit either.... big fun, but not productive.

After a day of ice climbing I stopped to whack some holes in a dead elm. After thrashing around a little in the tree it reminded me of being on ice that was cold and solid underneath with a bit of sun warmed skin on the outside. <my points and tools needed to be in about a hlaf inch before they felt solid.

Banging around like that was fun but it would never make sense to ascend a tree like that in any normal circumstance. After an ice storm when there is a veneer or shell of ice on the trees, wellll..., that's different. For a removal...gimme my points and plastic boots.

I gave up Ice Climbing in the south after an entire waterfall fell off over us...luclily there was a fifteen foot over hang that protected us....drank beer the rest of the day.
