THE POSITION



The City and County of Denver's Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking skilled and qualified candidates for the position of Arborist Technician I to work for the Natural Resources Division - Forestry Work Group (Citywide Operation). This position performs standard level pruning, tree planting and establishment, removing trees, inventory with mobile devices and applying insecticides to trees and shrubbery.

The Natural Resources Division - Forestry Work Group maintains all city owned trees within the park and parkway system throughout the city; we also maintain trees in and around public office buildings and natural areas. Most of the duties performed by this position focus on pruning and removing medium to large trees. We are in the risk assessment/management business, lessening the risk trees could pose to our park users and visitors. We are also in the good growing business and focus on what is best for the tree within the urban forest.

Denver's Parks and Recreation Department boasts one of the most expansive and diverse park systems in the Rocky Mountain West offering: more than 350 urban parks and parkways, 7 golf courses, one of the largest skate parks in the region, 14,000 acres of mountain parks, the Buffalo Bill Museum and bison herd, and a Ropes Challenge Course. We also provide and manage 27 neighborhood recreation centers with 13 indoor and 16 outdoor pools that offer hundreds of affordable programs throughout the year to our community.

The schedule for this opportunity will be M-F 6:30-3PM with flexibility to work some weekends based on need.

The location of work will be: 945 South Huron Street, Denver, CO.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES



The Arborist Technician I performs standard level duties in the field to include all aspects of arboriculture and general forestry work to support the City's urban forest. This includes tree pruning, planting and establishment, transplanting, watering, fertilizing, tree removal, insect/disease identification, pesticide application and inventory with mobile devices. This position is under normal supervision and reports to an Arborist Technician II or Operations Supervisor.

Prunes dead, diseased, or broken branches in trees utilizing rope and saddle, chain/hand saw and other related equipment involved in large tree care (in excess of 70') and small tree maintenance. Inspects and identifies tree diseases and insects of the area distinguishing between biotic and abiotic stresses. Operates a wide variety of heavy and power equipment in pruning and removing trees and shrubbery, including a mobile aerial tower unit, tandem trucks, loaders, stump grinders and chippers. Ensures proper preparation and application of insecticides with high velocity application equipment.

Places and removes barricade, cones, and other traffic control and safety devices in and around work area; may act as a traffic safety flagger. Maintains records and prepares daily activity reports, and may perform preventative maintenance on equipment.



QUALIFICATIONS
Education Requirement:

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate.
Experience Requirement:
  • One (1) year of experience in tree identification, tree planting and establishment, diagnosis and management of abiotic and biotic plant stresses and advanced tree pruning and removing techniques.
Licensure Requirement:
  • Employee must have or obtain within 6 months of hire date the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Tree Worker Climber Specialist or Aerial Lift Specialist certification.
  • Possession of a valid Colorado "Class R" Driver's License at the time of application.
  • Possession of a valid Colorado Commercial Driver's License (CDL) "B" with appropriate endorsements by a good record by the end of probation. Licensure must be kept current as a condition of continued employment in this class.
  • To be considered for positions requiring driving, applicants must bring a current copy (no more than two weeks old) of their complete "Full Record" motor vehicle history record if contacted for an interview.
  • Under Denver Park's requirements regarding positions that require driving, a candidate must have 3 recent years of good driving record. This includes the following:
  • No revocation, suspension, or cancellation/denial has occurred in the last three (3) years for traffic related violations (including insurance).
  • Less than 8 points against the individual's drivers license in the last 3 years.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior inventory experience with mobile devices.
  • Possession of a Certified Operator pesticide applicator's license.
  • Prior rope and saddle experience.
