choosing the right skid steer

Location

We are currently running a 2005 New Holland LS 170. New Holland is the closest dealer to me, so that was a heavy consideration. However, dealer support has been terrible. I'm thinking of updating to a new machine, but don't want to buy something problematic.

I need a vertical lift machine since it will be used mainly to load logs onto dump trucks or log trucks. The 170 has been a good size for us due to its compact size and weight. I can maneuver around yards with minimal damage after changing the tires to a less aggressive tread style.

What do you guys run and what are the pros and cons of your machines?

John Deere and Takeuchi are the next closest dealers, while Caterpillar and Bobcat are 1-1.5 hours away.

Would like a machine that doesn't have bad blind spots while backing. The New Holland has the old style controls and they are second nature to me, but I'm sure I can learn pilot controls quickly so that won't be a deal breaker.

Main things will be dependability, dealer support, maintenance costs, etc.

Chime in with your .02

Thanks

Welcome to Treebuzz CTS. This thread might get more views and perhaps more participation over in the "Rubber Hits The Road" section where you put your flatbed question. You could just copy your original post and start a new thread over there.

I'm just starting to use a small wheel loader myself so no real help or input.

Have you considered an articulating loader? Much better visibility and much less turf damage. The main downside for tree work is they cost more than a skid steer. The machine in the video (AL340) has 3" less lift height than your 170, the AL540 has 4" more. In the size you're looking for (~1750lb capacity), both Giant and Gehl make suitable offerings.
