Chipper discharge chute mod

I recently purchased a new chip truck. A super-nice job by Southco on the chipper bed, but the roof is lower than my last truck. So now my chipper shoots chips all over the place, due to the roof being lower. I spend more time cleaning up chips than I used to, because some backfire, and others go over the roof.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever lengthened the discharge chute on their chipper to more precisely aim the chips. If so, any lessons to learn?

I changed the angle of mine by cutting a really small pie shaped piece out of the chute, rewelding and fish plating the area.

Let me know, I'll share some tips about figuring the correct angle.

I used rink board/poly. With a heat gun and self tapping screws I. Made a bow and a flap like tongue on the underside. Worked a treat and another clear shoot from a mower to add another 2' plus I changed my tire from 12" to an 8"almost perfect. Getcha pics if needed.
Cheers

I had the same problem with a bandit 250xp. I bought a new chute from bandit that has adjustable height. It still doesn't get chips to the front of the box like I want but does pretty well.

As an interim solution you can unhitch it and stand it on its' leg, then lower the leg to get your chute down. Painful but perhaps less than chip sweeping.

Wow. Thanks for all the replies.

I will attach a picture of my Carlton 1712 - maybe that will clarify what I'm trying to do. The chute has a welded adjustable "tip" about a foot long, as you'll see in the image.

I'm thinking that lengthening it will help guide the chips better. I get "overspray" of chips, maybe 5% of the total chipload, when trying to fill the truck most efficiently (from top down).

So, I would love to see the images you have, Ropeshield, Tom, if you have some readily available.

Thanks!

I don't have pics of mine, but if you look at the base of the chute in this pic, you can see the stationary part with the adjustment holes. I was suggesting adding to that to go higher in the back, therefore lower in the front. Edit - I just looked at some Carlton pics, and I see that they don't have this option.

Interesting idea, Tom. Thanks for the image. Just seems like more work involved than sliding something over the tip of the chute, plus it could mess with the fundamental design i.e. chips may accumulate and clog. This chipper has never clogged, don't want to make a change that changes that fact.

Does the chipper have an adjustable tounge?? If it does you can try to move the hitch up one space... Problem is lower the tounge higher the feed tray. But you wont be changing anything with the chute.

Yeah, if it doesn't have the option, I wouldn't go customizing that area.

Hope this helps :)
The shoot is mounted with 2 long bolts,a sleeve of ali tube, wing nuts and then locked with cotter pins(in travel). I do this to tip it even further to fit into the garage. Haven't tried it tipped and chipping, it would probabley be a mess.

The poly bow and flap in white works perfect to allow hinging to aim fully up or down and the 2' clear tube works fairly well to spot aim the chips into the corner pockets.
I am very happy with this set up considering I do not have a closed top chip truck, just ali sides with tarp over.

I think jim454 did a custom extension job to a morbark. About the same concept as RopeShied's; tried to find the pics but had no luck maybe he'll chime in.

Also, any chance you know Mike Silken in the Raleigh/Durham market? I'm pretty sure he has the exact same chipper... could probably offer some suggestions.

Rope, thanks for your pictures. That is what I was thinking about doing, although I hope to make it look almost factory if possible. Not saying anything bad about your setup, of course. Just my preference.

Your second attachment isn't working, though.

Really, thanks, I need to think about where to get the " rink board/poly" you mention. Or, go with some really thin steel and get it professionally bent just right.

Polyethylen sheet at any Plastics place.
Ali sheeting would be my first choice, siding guy could help you out with the cut and bends.
I just found the poly was easy to cut, shape and form. Its nice and flexible at 1/8", takes a screw.
Hand saw, rasp, hot air gun and screw gun.
The poly was strapped and screwed into place and then heated and forced round and then sides heated and forced to the sides and then screwed down.
You can score the poly as well to get it to fold.
Any longer and would get in the way of truck access of the chipper tongue so the clear tube comes off and on as needed.

The perfect shoot would telescope and hinge.
Pics are fixed.
Happy Sunday!

Rope, thanks again. Sorry, but by "ali" sheet do you mean sheet metal? Can't find a definitive answer with Google.

I went out to Lowes in the mean time and bought a 7" x 24" round piece of duct work. Chute is wider than that, but I'm thinking I'll force it around, bottom will be open just like the rectangular chute, and I'll tie it on temporarily. If this one isn't long enough, there is a 60" piece I can try. Twas only $5, so not a lot invested to give it a shot.

If this works, I'll probably go the "ali" sheet (if that's sheet metal) and get it all done nice. Local place will bend it and cut it, then i just have to figure out how to hinge it to what I have already.

Yes aluminium sheet metal.
I looked at some stove pipe, its not a bad option.
Stainless steel chimney pipe is nice and shiney.
My shoot had to be done with the bow and tongue to maintain the deflector. I would keep that in mind.
Cheers
