Thinking about getting a Klein 1613-40 Chicago® Grip. This model is rated for 1/8"-3/8" & 4500# SWL, which seems perfect for my purposes. Any recommendations about which model and where to buy?

A Chicago grip is superior to a Havens grip as it distributes the load over more of the cable. Either will work, but if you really have to crank down tight, a Havens grip will put a kink in the cable. Not too much of a problem with EHS, but soft lay cable will distort somewhat.

Pretension the stems with a rope come along, bam! And obviously a second climber really helps with the 40+ footers as well! Only used an actual ratcheting cable come along in some really big elms and pulling those gnarly huge stems together, usually a simple 3:1 rope come along and some grunting will move some good sized pieces placed high enough!

I cheat like that too on occassion.

Small trees if you anchor the cable to the stem you're tied into first, can just use yourself to pull the pieces together, throw your lanyard on, crank your climb line tight and away you go.

Chicago grips are priceless when installing cables solo, and especially with Rigguys. No need to go back to the other side of the tree, and everything is done within an arms reach.

Stay away from Havens grips, like Top said. They sure kink up the cable nicey nice.

I think if you read the standard closely this is why it requires a chicago grip especially for EHS. My standard is at the office I'll check later because now I am curious.

To address the original question we have had that same Klien grip pictured for 20 years and it is still going strong. Ours is permanently attached to the come-a-long.

BTW. You can also use right and left threaded lags in pairs.

I'm with BostonBull, great bandwagon, never any trouble on 40+ spans. The less tools needed the better. A little brute force and tighten the nut/nuts the rest of the way.

Provided you use through bolts or lags.

Youd never get a 40+ft. span even close to taut terminating with Rigguy ends without a comealong. Unless you used a rope to pull the tops together somewhat. But a comealong with grip is ALOT faster than that, and less hassle.

Leaving the nuts a little loose and cranking them in when the cable is installed pulls stuff together nicely as well. Im on the no ratchet/grip bandwagon too.

thats what im saying man. most cables I see are installed way too tight.

havens crimped ehs way too much; Chicago much smoother. tom shop used; you might get very lucky.
extra weight with that and comealong but essential with wirestops or wedgegrips. yup have done rope and leaning tricks to tauten (not tighten) when possible, which is not all that often on big jobs.

what do nuts and lags have to do with cabling in 2011?
