Charts and Acronyms

I see tons of interesting discussions about rigging, ropes, equipment, etc., here. Two things which spring to mind are a need for keeping track of Acronyms and Chart info:

1- Acronyms - it would be nice to see a page maintained on TreeBuzz for all of them to make life easier for everyone to digest these discussions. I started my own list, but am sure this would very quickly grow.

2- Arborist Charts - it would be nice to have a place to keep charts and web links where charts or other info can be found for things like melting points of various rope/cord materials i.e. Spectra, Dyneema, Nylon, etc. (this is currently an active topic in Rigging and Roping - "Is this the cheapest rigging setup?").

Would it make sense to create a new forum folder for these ?

Just wondering what other people think about this...

as an example, here is a list I started only yesterday to keep track of acronyms. Note: the list would read much better if this can either be in chart format or could be left justified with two columns - one for the acronym and another for the definition:


DRT Double Rope Technique
DdRT Doubled Rope Technique
FC False Crotch
FL Foot Locking
HAAS ???
RADS Rope Ascender/Descender System
RIG ?
SRT Single Rope Technique
RoR FS Ring on Ring Friction Saver
Uni UniCender
RW Rope Wrench
VT Val de Tain tresse
WP Work Positioning
 
VT is Valdotain Tresse. The compulsion to acronymize everything drives me nuts to be honest, I think it makes things way to complicated. Or TCTAEDMNTBHITIMTWTC.
 
I.P. - Idiot Pile - cutting all the branches out of the tree then crashing all the heavy timber down on top these branches before the groundcrew have had a chance to remove them thus creating an I.P. The 'idiot' can at different times refer to the climber who made the pile or the ground crew as a collective for allowing the idiot pile to happen, or finally it can apply to everyone on site who was present at the creation of the idiot pile.

Just got word that the HAAS system has been refined once again and he titled it: Hauling A$$ Ascent System.

Kinda depends on the size of the A$$ doesn't it?

When is an idiot pile not an idiot pile ?
When its done on purpose to keep them big chunks of wood from completely humping the all living heck out of HO's lawn.
I guess thats when you call it the 'Crash Pad Pile' or CPP for short, works super duper when done right.

all joking aside, it can lead to high blood pressure for groundies.
 
charts could be added as another page in the top list of pages (xpert speakers, archives, articles, etc). It would be nice to have that easily available on the site instead of going to a commercial site for say, the green log chart or the rope data. A glossary of terms could also be added to that covering not only acronyms but other industry specific terminology.

Tom? Mark? Can you do it?
 
It would be much easier to make a new forum or make a Sticky post in one of the forums.

My creative mind is spent. Today was a good work day in the shop so I'm out of juice. Come up with a forum name or something. It's easy to add a forum.
 
I feel a whole forum may be too much for a smallish item such as this. How about a sticky in the Climbers Talk. the first posts on this thread should have attachment of the acronyms chart green wood weight chart etc

Agreed, all that is required is a sticky thread, a whole forum for acronyms and meanings seems a bit much, no offense meant Tom.
 
Tom, you can disable the replys to a thread right.
What about making a thread for a subject like climbing acronyms. It contains one post, in that post is a link to a PDF document with the up to date list. That up to date list is composted of comments and submitals from the active discussion thread. One person, subject to the group and ultimately you, keeps that document current and constantly changing BUT the link to it does not change. So every time someone clicks the link on the "one post" thread, it will take them to the most current version of the document. That document can then be downloaded, viewed or printed at anytime.

(I would not make the suggestion without offering my time to do it) with a no spam guarantee :) I have a personal, non commercial website I can use for this.

Just to get us back on track here, I originally suggested to create a solution for 2 things:

1) Lists - to maintain Terms/Acronyms/glossary of terms

2) Charts - to maintain tables of information ie. types of rope (dyneema, Perlon, Spectra, Nylon, etc.), rope melting points, biner info, interesting URLs, etc, etc.

I imagine the easiest way to do this is to have a folder (the sticky notes seem to result in the same thing in my mind) and someone 'owns' this and updates them [as Yoyo suggested). I would also be happy to volunteer some of my time if that would help.
