Chapter Boards... Or other

Been here much more than a while

Hi, I thought I'd bring up the question of how many here have sat on chapter boards, or other non-profit boards? I'm currently throwing caution to the wind and running for one, but I'd like to hear from any experienced hands on deck. Most I've spoken to have said it's a fun and enjoyable rewarding experience.
Any insights?

I've served on the boards of two very different organizations. As expected the good and the bad, the issues or not, varied based on the organization's makeup, mission etc.

Fund-raising is typically a high priority for small non-profits. I was a bit naive for my first assignment, turns out two major "profiles" for board members were either "have deep pockets" or "willing to fully engage in ongoing fund-raising activities". I fit neither category well ;-) The other organization had some deep policy divisions within the board, I gave up trying to be a peacemaker (efforts over time appeared to be wasted) and resigned.

I have friends and acquaintances who have very productive long-term associations with non-profits as board members. It's a special skill to not become preoccupied with in-house "politics" while striving to support keeping the organization moving ahead positively.
