Champion Trees

Who has researched their respected states Champion trees? I have noted a discripency on the 3 TN lists. I was hoping to update the lists and climb many during the process. Has anyone attempted this and run into problems?

Why would there be an issue? Why would the list keeper object to having a more accurate measurement and point tally?

When I was in Minnesota I talked with the record keeper and they were really open to any help.

Make sure that you know how to take the right measurements, especially the height so that you have a credible record. Some of the records in MN were made with really inaccurate tools/techniques originally. When the a couple of the trees were climbed they shrank.

This is the same thing that was related in the book 'Wild Trees' too. Hanging a throwline from the top is the most accurate method. When I measured a friend's large elm I brought along my telescoping pole pruner so that I could get up the tip of the highest branches. If I did it again I would probably bring along some of my tent poles that have elastic cord running through them.

I was thinking private property owners or national parks where the trees reside may not want or allowing climbing of the specimins unless it is a single event for the purpose of accuracy.
