I have used voice actavated units in the past. I still find standard hand signals easier and faster for the operator, we just build that into the cost of the work.

Tieing into the tree is a pure judgment call for sure. When I was getting lowered into the tree I noticed it was further along than I thought so more investagation was required. I stayed on the crane and gave the leaded a good shake. It flexed quite well telling me there was good fiber. After I made the first cut I examined the wood to find the cambium and about a 1/2" to be totally shot. Leaving the rest to be good wood. The tree also had no structure weakness ( heartwood decay, co-doms etc.) After the assement and a plan to spread my wieght between tie it point and redirects plus spurs and trying hard to reduce lateral pull I felt it was safe.

Is there some books or videos out on crane work. I tell you, if I did crane work I would have a bunch more jobs I wouldn't have to walk away from.

I guess even though the tree was dead as dirt you still had good wood for a tie in? I have stayed away from vey dead trees in the past since I haven't learned crane work yet.
