What is the net end-distribution of chain bar oil in use ?
Saw chips
Edges of cut wood
Sprayed out into environment in front of bar

My major heat source in winter is wood.

I have started using a food smoker:
I have accumulated some coarse hardwood saw chips (maple, cherry, hickory, etc).de
I intend to cut 1” thick discs for a smoke source from seasoned cherry, maple, etc.

I understand a precise answer depends on the chain tooth cutter type, saw oiler high-low setting, wood diameter Vs bar length, etc.

I would expect that probably half of the oil is sling off the end of the bar, with most of the remainder mixed in the saw chip - primarily in the fine dust that actually get in the chain. Probably very little ends up on the cut wood ends, as they don’t really contact the chain, only the cutters.

My sense is that any drips of bar lube oil that might be on the wood in the smoker are vaporized while the coals are graying or early in the fire-up. By the time food went on for cooking the oil would be gone. Just my feelings..no hard science to go with it.

If I was real concerned I'd clean out an oil tank on a saw and use veggie oil

there are too many variables... thickness of oil, temp, cutting with the top chain or bottom, on and on.. I've seen wood stained by the red cushion seal bar oil, its gets in and soaks in. I saved all the bar oil jugs the two of us used on the crew I use to work for, It was quite a pile of gallon jugs, I then got a flash of opening them up full and dumping them on the ground, one at a time. I personally switched to bio only that day.
I do know that the above isn't exactly fair, and that it's dispersed over a wide area, a little here a little there... Don't matter to me, I rather replace saws (actually have had 0 notice of unacceptable wear or parts) and use bio oils..
