Certified

Every utility, government agency, province, state, etc. has their qualifications that you must meet to work under live conditions. What are yours? Just for curiosity. ie. schooling? hours?crediatials? etc.

No, unfornately I did make make it. I'm ISA certified and active in the field but my company did not see fit to send me. My boss and "tech" went instead. When I get important enough I guess I'll get there /forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif

In BC you get to be a CUA (certified utility arborist) after a few years of apprenticing. its not connected to ISA, I think its via BC Hydro. with it you can work within approach limits that the rest of us cannot under WCB rules.

In Norway a two hour course will allow you to work under high voltage lines. Low voltage lines clearing do not require any training at all. This of course leadst to that all sorts of "arborists" are doing line clearance work with all sorts of result.

1,000 volts here. In MA you must pass a EHAP course with 100% accuracy in order to work under the "High" voltage. Most companies also require that you apprentice first under a line clearance foreman.

The company I worked for before getting activated (9-11) had a policy that if you went to the row crew, you started as a groundman if you had no training. Did the ojt thing till you could show competence at climbing. Worked your way up to manual tree trimmer, then aeriel basket tree trimmer. We had to attend monthly safety meetings, but these were mostly for the line crews. When I migrated to the line crew, we had a 3 year course taught by one of our engineers once a week at night and had to attend 2 climbing schools- pole stuff, no trees. I saw a lot of bad habits while on the row crew that I had to get out of my system when we started our own business.

Utility Arborist Apprenticship is coming soon and if that is the way you are treated you should find another company. Education and training is the way to go if you are being held back, enough is said

I'm not worried one bit about being held back. Don't get me wrong, my company treats me pretty good for the most part. I should be grandfathered into the program with the training and experience I have but if I have to write the test then so be it.
