One of the trees I removed on Sunday was an Eastern White Cedar and the bark appeared to be fractured on the high side of this leaning tree.
After removing the bark while assessing the condition of the tree everything was quite normal.
I'm not sure what to make of it.
The fractures of the bark were only on the high side and down low on the trunk where there wouldn't be much flex in the tree.
This would be the North side so maybe dampness plays a role and the bark separates on the high side due to the stress from the lean then regenerates to compensate for the broken fibers.
How high up are those? I think you hit it on the head could also be when that was a young tree there was a fence and came out before to much damage was done.
