BOULDER CREEK, Calif. (AP) - An elderly San Lorenzo Valley woman was crushed to death by a redwood.

Fierce winds ripped the top off a redwood tree and hurled it into the yard of Loretta Malat, 73, who was outside with her dog. She was dead when firefighters arrived at the Wildwood area home Monday night.

Her Chihuahua was also killed.

Winds were gusting at 80 mph when they pulled off the 25-foot-long "pretty heavy" chunk of wood, fire Chief Sam Robustelli.

"It came down, hit her in the back and pushed her onto the ground," Robustelli said.

The high winds were part of a storm system brought on by a low-pressure system that's moved from the Gulf of Alaska, dumping hail and as much as 5 inches of rain in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
