Captain Hook Setup Questions

Get outta here, with yer planning ahead and forethought nonsense!
Haha!

It's been mentioned before but worth saying again... The Captain Hook has an impressive design feature, it is balanced in such a way that if you pull the Hook line slowly over a branch the Hook will flip over and grab the branch. If you pull it more quickly the Hook will not rotate quickly enough and it will come right off the branch.

Looking at how light Amsteel is got me thinking about a super lightweight line for use with the Captain Hook. Wondering if anyone has any ideas on a (preferably static) ultra lightweight 10mm-ish rope, that would stand up to some use with a hand ascender, without picking as much as I assume Amsteel would?

Look at Ultrex Plus, it’s an amsteel/ultrex core with a double braid cover so it won’t pick. I had some in my hand this morning at Gap Arborist, looking at crane sling options - it’s a little stiff, but very strong. The smallest size, 1/4”, is rated to 6k ABS.

10 mm Sirius Reepschnur is fairly lightweight, 100% polyester so it holds up well and is a fairly easy class 1 double braid splice....and it is fairly cheap. I have had my hook for a year or so and the line has held up to my hand and foot ascender very well

For a captain hook scenario, 30-50ish ft, I would look at HTP 11mm. Very strong for it's weight. I run it for hook, and as a main line, and the cover is damn near indestructible.
