California Structural Pruning "Tour"

I attended. It was a great time with lots of good information on not only pruning techniques but also climbing. While all the info presented may not be pertinent to every situation, I learned a different way to think about pruning and am better at my job as a result.

Welcome to TreeBuzz Diogenes. Thanks for posting here, I'm overdue on posting a couple of thoughts I wanted to share.

I went to both the Santa Rosa workshop and a couple of hours away to the Sacramento workshop the next day. I did this because I think the pruning info presented is so valuable and I wanted to learn as much as possible as soon as possible. Excellent examples were given of pruning and its corresponding results via pictures of the same tree in subsequent years.

Mark did not only a practical presentation of SRT enabling him to easily get to outer edges of the canopy, but also a very useful talking presentation on professionalism. His in tree demo helped in seeing what is physically possible, expanding peoples horizons - some it seemed for the first time. His talk on professionalism hit the mark for our industry as a whole in my opinion. If repeated enough times, and adopted by most, the concept he shares has the possibility of raising the tree industry to a whole new level.

Anyone able to get to the Southern California presentations, I would highly recommend it.

Not gonna make it...please post anything published!

JD I was hoping to get the magazine sized handout he has given away in the past and send it on to you. Sadly they did not have copies of that to give out. Ed did say however that not only is his power point presentation available online but, as he retired from university teaching, his whole lecture series of presentations were to be made available online as well. Try googeling his name and search most likely places. Alternatively I will dig out my notes and post his website info which I neglected to get up here in a more timely manner.

Merle I would bet that your right, and thank you for the thought. He basically put up the entire pruning BMP on the Florida website for free. One just has to pull up each topic such as structural pruning, mature tree pruning, etc. Excellent for making a pruning basics handbook if you dont feel like getting the BMP for each employee.
UF website is a pretty good resource to check out.
