Cabling question

Ever heard of Google calendar? You don't have to remember.

Yea thanks for that suggestion. Ill have to try that next time... I'm not some stone age tree hack that doesn't know how to use a computer. Google calendar is a great tool but I'm not going to schedule a 45 min job, in the middle of next year and the year after. Who knows if I will even be in that area to be able to service that client during that day, week, or even month!

Fair enough.

Good for you, you know where you stand.

I could really give a shit about money and their so called "owners", but, I'm passionate about trees.

That's really cool and all but something has to pay the bills. I care about trees too, I'm not in this business for my health, or to get rich. If I wanted to make 7 figures I would be in a different profession. There are all kinds of ways to accomplish the same thing, you have yours I have mine and 802climber may even be different. But you don't have to question others dedication to trees, clients or our businesses.

Didn't question or assume one thing about your dedication, I was explaining myself.

I live in a bubble, don't burst it, thanks! :-)

The BMP used to say both "annual" and "periodic", which was sooo confusing. In ANSI we clarified it was periodic. That period ranges from 1-5 years for us and the owner is reminded that it's up to them.
Nothing wrong with Worthaug's approach to get prepayment though.

The German standard with its FAR superior guidance does not say annual. Just skimmed the 2014 BMP; some major factual issues exist, and a huge bias toward zero business risk, and 20th-century materials and methods.

Glad to hear a closer look at pruning options was done--those forks did not look like cabling was needed.

@Worthaug I like the idea of having them pay in advance to assure that the inspections actually happen, but you may be exposing yourself to a lot of liability. It could be construed that you are creating a "guarantee period". And if you're comfortable with that, then more power to you. I agree with what you're saying about our sue happy society. Unfortunately it is the climate we have to do business in, and a 1mil insurance policy doesn't go very far in a lawsuit.
I guess my point is that some clients cannot be forced to follow through with maintenance or be proactive, no matter what the contract says, or how hard we try to look out for them or their trees. If something happened that was beyond your control and resulted in a failure etc, they may point the finger at you as the professional saying the tree is "safe".
So I think as long as you're very specific about the scope and limitations of inspections, which I'm sure you are, then you should be all set. I prefer to ultimately place the responsibility on the client, otherwise I find myself spending too much unbillable time trying to pin them down.

I am all about looking out for the trees as long as I can make a living and cover my ass in the process.

Having consulted, reported, and testified in cases where cabled trees failed and caused injuries and fatalities, it's clear to me that the fears around lawsuits and liability are waaay out of proportion to the reality.

Yes it's good to CYA, Yes disclose your limitations, but don't let that put a lot of limits on your practice.
