Iowa temperatures go up and down, from 46 last Friday to -4Saturday morning. then 35 yesterday and down to single digits today.
I work throughout the winter as long as it's not below 0⁰F and/or the wind takes the feels like temperatures down that low. But I got a little Frost nip on a couple fingers on Monday so taking it easier on this colder day, my 5-year-old is excited about helping clean a very dirty 2511- I swear it's twice as dirty as my other top handle saws and not just because I use it all the time...

what other ways do you keep your employees engaged on days with unbearable cold? I'm hoping to avoid getting into snow moving... I've heard of guys contracting work in warmer places, but that sounds like logistics nightmare

If I didn't have a kid I'd probably spend my winters in Mexico or some other warmer climate. But nooooo, he's gotta stay in school and learn things. :crying:

I used to love winter back when they were the cold, snowy kind of my youth. When that crisp air was invigorating. Our winters here are now these damp, milder days where it just chills you to the core. And everything is ice because of the constant thaw/freeze cycle. But nah, climate change ain't real.....

Gross. Yeah I love cold winters. It's easy to dress for. I like wearing layers, lol. The snow bounces off. I'll take -10 to 10 over 30-45 any day

We've had a short cold snap -10 to -20C and I feel it going outside for firewood. Just a decade ago I was pumped and primed to go out at midnight -15 best to manually build the outdoor rink (sloped). Can't even imagine that now and the damn thing would melt anyway. Used to make a "brick/castle" snow fence that the christmas lights would melt cavities into to great effect. Can't anymore. With you on the climate change.

We homeschool, and a 3-4 week roadtrip is in the long term plans, but we really need to finish the house before we can justify it. It feels like a major indulgence, but I believe it will be a major landmark in my daughters memories of youth, and is one that I remember being super impactful on my youth. I had the same teacher in first and second grade, and he recomended it as something every kid should get to do to understand what it means to be an American. meet people from all corners and see what it looks like; understand how they are the same and how they are different; perspective. I went back out and took a few more years alone to get deep into it.

How's the school system in the ether?

I've considered a migrant type of life with the kids homeschooling or something like that...
We have the lowest test scores in the country.

Homeschooling sounds good in theory. I looked into it a few years back and you're really limiting your kids by doing that. Most colleges won't recognize a homeschool diploma (at least up here), it's a big time commitment, and the biggest one for me was lack of socializing (he's an only child).

I had an extremely transient childhood. Not homeschooled, so I was in and out of multiple schools per year. It fucked me up pretty good and don't think it's worth it.

I would like to move him over to Europe (I have EU citizenship) for a few years to expose him to totally different cultures, but I'm also a co-parent and convincing his mother isn't happening.

The schools around this specific area/town (Oroville) are notoriously bad, and we do A LOT of activities with other homeschool kids, and she does 3-6 hours of training per week with the same groups of kids for jiu jitsu and kick boxing. I imagine that she will want to do a regular highschool by the time we get there too, but we want to help her become solidly her own person. All the kids in public school we see at her classes and groups are little fuckheads that tease and bully, and all the other homeschoolers she plays with are sweet and polite. I don't think we fucked up. but my wife baffles me with how much she works to keep it all together. She motivates me to work at least as hard at all the other shit that is in my wheelhouse. Without her, I would doubtless be achieving much less, and would never have raised my standards. She saved me from myself, and I enable her to stay at home and raise an amazing girl with many developed talents.

Have you looked into homeschool co-ops? There are some pretty decent ones with resources. Few folks down here don’t know about the OASIS k-12 program. Essentially a state homeschool program as they allocate funds for all students and this allows for approved things like museum tickets and homeschool amendment programs. Our eldest attended a 98% outdoor based school in the oldgrowth forest.

We are in a similar program. They even let us request all kinds of stuff, allocating us $1500 per semester to get school supplies. They have to approve the purchases, but since they buy it, we get school discount pricing.

Oh nice! I know those dogs pretty well, smart hunting dogs! Warchild is good man, thanks for asking. He's half a man now lol. Been teaching the boys chess, I really love seeing the game take hold in their young minds.
Dude chess is so good, I love it!! Glad you’re teaching it to the next generation. I’ve played since I can remember! I play online with some dumb ass app that shoves stupid ads in my face guess since I’m too cheap to pay for a chess app..
I don’t have many prospects around me to give a good match
Guess what I’m saying is they and you all are lucky to have someone real to play with , that’s awesome
