I wish the day labor that I hire had that kind of energy!

To mitigate the loss in stability,
1. consider installing a prop under lower limbs to prevent toppling
2. Have the outer crown reduced <15%, with <4"cuts.
3. Modify the soil near the root damage to spur regrowth.

If I was closer to Monterey, I'd do it!

Guy what do you use for props under things that size?
 
Those lines look like the tree has been girdled by old fence wire. Also correct me if I'm wrong but that looks like a lightening strike scar as well. That is a very serious wound to the root system.. consult a local, reputable arborist immediately if you want any hope of saving it.
